Nosferatu With Radiohead: A Silents Synced Film

6:20pm - Friday, Oct 11, 2024

Silents Synced pairs classic silent movies with epic rock music. Created by an independent cinema owner for independent cinemas! Silents Synced will be available to book exclusively for independents and drive ins only! The first film will feature Radiohead’s “KID A (2000) / Amnesiac (2001),” paired with F. W. Murnau's NOSFERATU (1923). NOSFERATU X RADIOHEAD is directed and remixed by Josh Frank. Unleashed upon the world in 1922, German filmmaker F.W. Murnau's NOSFERATU is most certainly the most important horror film of the silent era, and one of the first vampire movies. The fact that it exists at all is something of a miracle, as it was almost completely lost when Bram Stoker's widow sued the filmmakers for copyright infringement, and most of the prints of the movie were subsequently destroyed. NOSFERATU tells the story of Hutter and Ellen, a couple from the village of Wisborg. Hutter travels to Transylvania to sell a piece of property in Wisborg to Count Orlok. Hutter stays in Orlok’s castle only to learn that the Count is a vampire. Orlok purchases a house next to Hutter’s, locks Hutter in the castle and travels to Wisborg. On the way, he manages to possess Hutter’s employer and Ellen and strike the village with an outbreak of the plague. Hutter rushes home to stop him before it’s too late. "The [Silents Synced] project is the brainchild of Josh Frank, who has written plays and books about music, as well as owning and programming independent movie theaters in Austin, Texas. “This is the culmination of everything I’ve been involved with creatively,” he says. “The theme here is what else can you do with your favorite music? It’s about the theatrics of putting on a show for people and using what I’m passionate about, which is music and experimenting with narrative.” Frank conceived of this idea two decades ago playing Nine Inch Nails’ album “The Fragile” while watching Fritz Lang’s classic 1927 silent “Metropolis.” (The weird synchronicity between rock music and old movies goes back to the 1990s when Pink Floyd fans noticed a surreal connection when “Dark Side of the Moon” was paired with “The Wizard of Oz.”) Frank, who equates the experience to him seeing the Pink Floyd Laser Light Show as a teen, loves the movies but is driven at least equally by his passion for music. “When I find the right album that pairs with the movie, something magical [happens] that creates a whole new context for the music and for the movie,” he says. “This music you’ve been listening to for 20 years, you suddenly have the same excitement the first time you heard it. When I put Radiohead up against ‘Nosferatu,’ there were many moments throughout where I got goosebumps.” (Los Angeles Times) Friday, October 11 Doors 5:50 pm | Movie 6:20 pm *Start time subject to change. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre - 50th Anniversary Screening

11:30pm - Friday, Oct 11, 2024

Happy Birthday, Leatherface! The Rio Theatre's Friday Late Night Movie series continues on October 11 with a 50th Anniversary screening of one of our all-time favourite late-night, scary cinematic offerings: Tobe Hooper's iconic 1974 slasher masterpiece, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (gore-geously remastered in 2014!). Just as Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO was based on the life of deeply disturbed farmer Ed Gein, so is this little story of depravity and dementia. When a sister and her brother take a group of friends to visit the farmhouse of their deceased grandfather, they discover that just next door lives a whole family of repugnant psycho killers. Most noteworthy is "Leatherface" (Gunnar Hansen), the chainsaw-wielding fellow who has something of a penchant for human flesh. Though the film did not enjoy immediate success at the box office, it has since gathered a hefty cult following, and is considered by many to be groundbreaking work in the genre of horror. More than just a mere slasher or exploitation film, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE works almost entirely because of the absolute commitment from its principle cast; there are very few instances of a character in a film (horror or otherwise) whose silent, wordless presence is capable of delivering the tremendous balance of sheer terror and pathos that Gunnar Hansen convey as Leatherface, whose performance as the chainsaw-wielding cannibal who terrorizes a young woman (another of the film's phenomenal performances from scream queen Marilyn Burns) and her friends is as tense and frightening today as it was in 1974. "Thanks to a smart script and documentary-style camerawork, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE achieves start-to-finish suspense, making it a classic in low-budget exploitation cinema." (Rotten Tomatoes) Friday, October 11 Doors 11:00 pm | Movie 11:30 pm *Start time subject to change. Please arrive on time. Late Night Date Night! Bring a friend, date, or chainsaw-wielding pal and get TWO-FOR-ONE entry! THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (Tobe Hooper, 1974 / 83 mins / 18A) When Sally (Marilyn Burns) hears that her grandfather's grave may have been vandalized, she and her paraplegic brother, Franklin (Paul A. Partain), set out with their friends to investigate. After a detour to their family's old farmhouse, they discover a group of crazed, murderous outcasts living next door. As the group is attacked one by one by the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen), who wears a mask of human skin, the survivors must do everything they can to escape. [more]

Longlegs: Final Screening

3:30pm - Sunday, Oct 13, 2024

Writer-director Osgoode Perkins' LONGLEGS has easily emerged as "the" horror movie of 2024; in addition to thrilling audiences thanks to the filmmaker's commitment to the genre and bravura performances from Maika Monore and Nicolas Cage, the Vancouver-shot film has become the highest grossing independent film of the year. The film follows an FBI agent (Monroe) in pursuit of a serial killer (Cage), who uncovers a series of occult clues that she must solve to end his terrifying killing spree. With Alicia Witt, Kiernan Shipka, Blair Underwood. "Longlegs isn’t breaking new ground. It is, however, intent on tilling that cursed earth in the name of its own rotten harvest." (Rolling Stone) "It’s a true sight to behold, but take care to not look too long. No matter how tightly you try to cling to sanity, one truth remains in “Longlegs”: We all go a little mad sometimes." (Seattle Times) "Part of what makes the film so effective is that it doesn’t really depend on secrets or surprises. The writer and director Osgood Perkins summons an atmosphere of dread so intense, it’s practically spoiler-proof." (NPR) "The entire addictive film, written and directed by Oz Perkins, is one of the best horror movies of the past several years." (New York Post) "Connecting all the dots has never been Perkins’ aim as a filmmaker. He wants to create dark worlds that swallow viewers whole and make them feel they’ve been infected by something horrible, unknowable and unstoppable. Longlegs wickedly achieves that goal." (Toronto Star) Sunday, October 13: Final Screening Doors 3:00 pm | Movie 3:30 pm *Start time subject to change. Please arrive on time. Please note this screening will not include a director introduction. LONGLEGS (Osgoode Perkins, 2024 / 100 mins / 14A) FBI Agent Lee Harker is assigned to an unsolved serial killer case that takes an unexpected turn, revealing evidence of the occult. Beetlejuice is back! After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem. "Michael Keaton's devious poltergeist still has plenty of juice left in this madcap return to form for Tim Burton, marrying charming practical effects and ghoulish gags to provide a fun fun time." (Rotten Tomatoes) "Every hot glue daub and jaggedy latex stitch and hand-painted margin detail is not only visible onscreen but contributes to the feeling that you’re seeing a huge, fun thing that was made by humans, not software." (RogerEbert.com) "Fortunately, there isn’t a whiff of cynicism to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Burton shows real affection for the first film’s characters and genuine curiosity about how they’re doing three decades or so later." Frankie Freako (Filmmaker Steven Kostanski in Attendance for Q&A)

6:45pm - Monday, Oct 14, 2024

The legendary indie Canadian production company collective Astron-6 made waves across this country (and beyond) thanks to its impressive roster of retro, 80s-centric titles that include fan-favourites like MANBORG, FATHER'S DAY, and THE EDITOR. Though the collective is no more, founding member Steven Kostanski has continued making films that evoke the practical FX-heavy nostalgia of that era, with titles like THE VOID and PSYCHO GOREMAN. The Rio Theatre is excited to (finally!) welcome him to the venue for a screening of his latest entry, FRANKIE FREAKO, on October 14. Workaholic yuppie Conor (played by frequent collaborator Conor Sweeney) has a dilemma: no one in his life respects him! Not his boss, not his coworkers, not even his wife Kristina, who thinks he’s an uptight “square." Conor sees no way out of this existential rut until one night channel-surfing he catches a bizarre ad for a party hotline hosted by a strange dancing goblin: Frankie Freako. Conor is entranced by Frankie’s promises of wild and freaky adventures, just a phone call away - could this be the recipe to spice up his flavourless life? Home alone for the weekend, he works up the courage to dial the number for the Frankie Freako hotline. As soon as the call connects, it unleashes CHAOS into his white-collar world, releasing Frankie and his troublemaker friends from their dimensional prison. It’s a race against time as Conor must defeat the rambunctious ruffians and clean up their trail of destruction before Kristina returns from her trip, all while going on an unexpected journey of self-discovery. "It’s the best Terrifier yet, just in time to make your Christmas bloodier." That may or may not win people over, but it shouldn’t lose any repeat customers." (IndieWire) "'Terrifier 3' continues the series’s trend of dotting a sparse and sinuous thread of plot with mini-masterpieces of cinematic ultraviolence." One of the most inventive and scary artists in the city. She's rarely performing outside of music these days so were super lucky and excited to have her!REAL PARANORMAL INVESTIGATORS!! They were on the show many years ago where they told us that the Rio has active ghosts. To prove it, Paul and Ryan will sleepover at the theatre with the paranormal investigators and film the whole thing. We will present the video and have them on hand for follow up questions. Spooky!!! ROCK'N FAMILY REUNION!! Last year we forced a reunion show of this extraordinary band and now we are taking it one step further. Like many bands, they had lineup changes over the years. This show will feature every musician that was ever in the band, on stage playing together at once! 3 drummers (on 3 drum kits); 3 bassists, 2 singers (I stepped in on vocals for a couple shows - Paul) and Rick Rock'n on flying V guitar = The Rock'n Family Reunion! If you thought they were ridiculously fun before...you gotta see this! NARDWUAR called them “INCREDIBLE!” The Georgia Straight dubbed them “good-natured, loud, unpretentious. Stupid fun!” All of their songs are about ROCK’N. They received a slew of awards (mostly from a radio station in Prince George) including “Best Canadian Artist 2005” “Best Canadian album 2005” “Second best album worldwide 2005” “Best Live show 2005” and then never played again until last year on Talent Time. But wait... There's more! - Co-Host RYAN BEIL from The Sunday Service! - Video by Silas Egan & Owen Wong! - House band led by Kristy-Lee Audette! - Plus comedy, contests, more acts TBA and probably an on-site haunted house or some sort of spooky added experience. House ("Hausu")

10:45pm - Friday, Oct 18, 2024

The Rio Theatre's Friday Late Night Movie series continues on  with a screening of one of our favourite and most frequently requested titles - the bizarro 70's Japanese cult-classic oddity that is HOUSE ("Hausu"). Some movies can't be explained; they need to be experienced. HOUSE is one of those movies. (Trust.) How to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s indescribable 1977 movie HOUSE? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of 'Scooby-Doo' as directed by Mario Bava? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home who comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano, and other ghoulish visions, all realized by Obayashi via mattes, animation, and collage effects. Equally absurd and nightmarish, HOUSE might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet. "The best thing in this wild assemblage of collage and cartoon and fairy tale is that the girls, when they're eaten, scream with glee as their cut-out body parts spin around the frame. It's cannibalism as the ultimate kiddie ride." (Vulture) Friday, October 18 Doors 10:15 pm | Movie 10:45 pm *Start time subject to change. Please arrive on time. LATE NIGHT DATE NIGHT! Bring a friend, date, or pal and get two-for-one entry to this film! HOUSE "Hausu" (Nobuhiko Obayashi, 1977 / 88 mins / NR / Japanese with English subtitles) In an effort to avoid spending time with her father and his creepy new lover, young Gorgeous (Kimiko Ikegami) resolves to visit her aunt's remote mansion. With six of her closest friends in tow, including the musically inclined Melody (Eriko Tanaka) and the geeky Prof (Ai Matsubara), Gorgeous arrives at the estate, where supernatural events occur almost immediately. A severed head takes flight, household appliances come to life and a portrait of a cat seems to contain an evil spirit. [more]

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

12:15pm - Sunday, Oct 20, 2024

Burton shows real affection for the first film’s characters and genuine curiosity about how they’re doing three decades or so later." (NPR) "There's something comforting in seeing Tim Burton exorcising his demons, bringing everyone back together and conjuring up some of the warmth that was in the original." Back to the Future

6:30pm - Monday, Oct 21, 2024

"You built a time machine.... Out of a DeLorean?" Great Scott! We thought the time was right to to go back, way back, to 1985... And revisit Robert Zemeckis' original 80s classic, BACK TO THE FUTURE. But we're not just screening the original BACK TO THE FUTURE... We're also keeping it ramped at 88 and shifting gears for 2015 and then 1955 in BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II. Michael J. Fox stars as Marty McFly, a typical suburban teenager (circa 1985) who accidentally travels back in time - to 1955! Cue an amazing soundtrack featuring Huey Lewis and the News, Doc Brown, some angry Libyans, the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, and the horror of getting to know your parents as... kids. (No further exposition necessary - you know the story!) Also starring Lea Thompson, Christopher Lloyd, and Crispin Glover. Take some time to refuel and check your flux capacitator, and then... In this zany sequel, time-traveling duo Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown return from saving Marty's future son from disaster, only to discover their own time transformed. In this nightmarish version of Hill Valley, Marty's father has been murdered and Biff Tannen, Marty's nemesis, has profited. After uncovering the secret to Biff's success -- a sports almanac from the future -- Marty and the Doc embark on a quest to repair the space-time continuum. Jennifer's Body

9:30pm - Wednesday, Oct 23, 2024

In director Karyn Kusama's (GIRLFIGHT, AEON FLUX) 2009 cult horror-comedy JENNIFER'S BODY, Megan Fox stars as newly-possessed hottie high-school cheerleader turned succubus Jennifer, who specializes in killing her male classmates. While this she-demon satisfies her appetite for human flesh with the school's male population, her nerdy friend, the aptly named Needy (Amanda Seyfried), learns what's happening, and vows to put an end to the carnage. Featuring the sharp, funny, and clever dialogue of Oscar-winning scribe Diablo Cody (JUNO). Also starring Adam Brody, J.K. Simmons, Amy Sedaris, Chris Pratt, Johnny Simmons. "It's bleakly funny - campy and witty, like screenwriter Diablo Cody's previous hit Juno, but with gruesome turns that make it a perfect spooky season watch." (Polygon) "Unfairly maligned upon its initial release, Jennifer's Body proves to be a pitch-perfect blend of horror and comedy." (Horror Queens Podcast) "Confusion between friendship and love, the relationship between desire and fear, and bold, feminist strides. All of this was wrapped up in a fun, tense, and poignant story." (RogerEbert.com) "Fortunately, there isn’t a whiff of cynicism to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Burton shows real affection for the first film’s characters and genuine curiosity about how they’re doing three decades or so later." (NPR) "There's something comforting in seeing Tim Burton exorcising his demons, bringing everyone back together and conjuring up some of the warmth that was in the original." The Last Video Store (Directors in Attendance for Q&A!)

9:00pm - Thursday, Oct 24, 2024

In this love letter to the era of the video store, Nyla brings in a collection of films to quite possibly the last video store on earth only to discover she has the legendary 'cursed tape'. A film that holds the power to connect the real world to the dimension where movie fantasy exists as reality. Nyla and the video store owner unwittingly awaken a long-dormant curse that unleashes a series of classic cinematic villains plucked from the bowels of the B-movies themselves. With Kevin Martin, Yaayaa Adams, Matthew Kennedy, Josh Lenner and Leland Tilden. "A meta-horror blast of nostalgia about how loving movies can be both a blessing and a curse." (Slashfilm) "If you unabashedly love bad B-movies, 'The Last Video Store' pays respect to the VHS obsessives with an effective story about what happens when the drive-in characters decide to fight back." (Dread Central) "It’s all a glorious ode to the schlocky titles we loved in the ‘80s, right down to the simple visual and practical effects. Think Charles Band meets early Sam Raimi, and you won’t be far off." (Starburst) "With a setting based on star Kevin Martin's beloved cult video store The Lobby, THE LAST VIDEO STORE is a loving homage to the homegrown Canuxploitation, direct-to-video '90s sci-fi, and the rough-hewn potboilers that adorn its shelves. The feature debut of directing duo Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford, who produced a bunch of outrageous shorts filmed at The Lobby under the moniker House of Heathens, THE LAST VIDEO STORE is genre cinema lovingly crafted by true aficionados." (Fantastic Fest, 2023) Directors Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford will be in attendance for intro and post-show Q&A! Thursday, October 24 Doors 8:30 pm | Movie 9:00 pm *Start time subject to change. The Babadook (10th Anniversary Screening)

6:30pm - Friday, Oct 25, 2024

The Rio Theatre's series of Halloween classics continues with a 10th Anniversary screening of Jennifer Kent's critically acclaimed (not to mention terrifying) take on every parent's worst nightmare, THE BABADOOK. Released in 2014, the Australian indie horror film struck an immediate nerve among genre lovers, and in the decade since has emerged into its well-deserved status as both a feminist cult-classic and one that speak to subversive notions surrounding homophobia and "otherness," with the film's oddball, top-hatted villain being embraced as an (unlikely) LGBT icon. "A deftly inventive and psychologically charged horror story that trades on the ways in which the prospect of maternal failure can be just as fearsome a boogeyman as any monster under the bed." (Buzzfeed News) "As much a boogeyman story as it is a cautionary tale on the horrors of parenting... Parenting is stressful, and boogeymen are frightening, so utilizing both is an ingenious method for creating anxiety-ridden horror. " (Philosophy in Film) Friday, October 25 Doors 6:00 pm | Movie 6:30 pm *Start time subject to change. Please arrive on time. THE BABADOOK (Jennifer Kent, 2014 / 14A / 92 mins) A single mother and her child fall into a deep well of paranoia when an eerie children's book titled "Mister Babadook" manifests in their home. Shaun of the Dead (20th Anniversary Screening)

8:45pm - Friday, Oct 25, 2024

"You've got red on you." Our favourite mid-aughties British rom-zom-com SHAUN OF THE DEAD is celebrating 20 years of battling the undead! Since the release of his breakout hit in 2004, British writer-director Edgar Wright has cemented himself in the pop-culture landscape with several films that have all become instant pop-culture classics (SCOTT PILGRIM vs. THE WORLD) in their own right. Simon Pegg stars as Shaun, a 30-something loser with a dull, easy existence. When he's not working at the electronics store, he lives with his slovenly best friend, Ed (Nick Frost), in a small flat on the outskirts of London. The only unpredictable element in his life is his girlfriend, Liz, who wishes desperately for Shaun to grow up and be a man. When the town is inexplicably overrun with zombies, Shaun must rise to the occasion and protect both Liz and his mother from being eaten. With Lucy Davis, Matt Lucas, Bill Nigh, Martin Freeman, Penelope Wilton. "Twenty years after its release, 'Shaun of the Dead' remains a joyfully silly showcase for director Edgar Wright’s hyperkinetic visual style. It’s also unsettlingly prescient." (Splice Today) "The funniest zombie movie ever." (Good Morning America) "'Shaun of the Dead' is not only one of the single best zombie movies ever made, but it's also as close to perfect as a film can get." (Dread Central) Friday, October 25 Doors 8:15 pm | Movie 8:45 pm *Start time subject to change. Please arrive on time. SHAUN OF THE DEAD (Edgar Wright, 2004 / 99 mins / 18A) A man decides to turn his moribund life around by winning back his ex-girlfriend, reconciling his relationship with his mother, and dealing with an entire community that has returned from the dead to eat the living. Death Becomes Her

5:30pm - Saturday, Oct 26, 2024

The Rio Theatre's series of spooky Halloween fare continues on Thursday, October 24 with DEATH BECOMES HER - a film that has been requested many times over many year, but has yet to be played at the Rio Theatre - until now! Years later, she returns home to confront the now-married couple, looking radiant. Her ex-husband's new wife wants to know her secret, and discovers that she has been taking a mysterious drug which grants eternal life to the person who drinks it. The actress follows suit, but discovers that immortality has a price. With Isabella Rossellini. "'Death Becomes Her' is a magical and delightful illustration of queerness without sexuality." (Paste Magazine) "Insistently grotesque, relentlessly misanthropic and spectacularly tasteless, ''Death Becomes Her'''isn't a film designed to win the hearts of the mass moviegoing public. But it is diabolically inventive and very, very funny." (Chicago Tribune) "At the film's peak, Zemeckis, the cast, and the special-effects team achieve a deluxe, macabre slapstick." Bram Stoker's Dracula

8:00pm - Saturday, Oct 26, 2024

"I have crossed oceans of time to find you..." Francis Ford Coppola's gorgeously goth, Oscar-winning adaptation of Bram Stoker's iconic novel stars Gary Oldman in the title role as a nocturnal immortal who leaves the captive Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves) and Transylvania for London in search of Mina Harker -- the spitting image of Dracula's long-dead wife, Elisabeta (Winona Ryder). Obsessed vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) sets out to end the madness. Also starring Richard E. Grant, Cary Elwes, Billy Campbell, Tom Waits, Monica Bellucci. "Overblown in the best sense of the word, Francis Ford Coppola's vision of Bram Stoker's Dracula rescues the character from decades of campy interpretations -- and features some terrific performances to boot." (Rotten Tomatoes) "This luscious film restores the creature's nobility and gives him peace." (TIME Magazine) "It is Coppola's most lavish and, certainly, his most flamboyant film; never before has he allowed himself this kind of mad experimentation." Nosferatu With Radiohead: A Silents Synced Film (Final Screening)

5:45pm - Sunday, Oct 27, 2024

Silents Synced pairs classic silent movies with epic rock music. Created by an independent cinema owner for independent cinemas! Silents Synced will be available to book exclusively for independents and drive ins only! The first film will feature Radiohead’s “KID A (2000) / Amnesiac (2001),” paired with F. W. Murnau's NOSFERATU (1923). NOSFERATU X RADIOHEAD is directed and remixed by Josh Frank. Sunday, October 27 Doors 5:00 pm | Movie 5:30 pm *Start time subject to change. Please arrive on time. When I put Radiohead up against ‘Nosferatu,’ there were many moments throughout where I got goosebumps.” (Los Angeles Times) [more]

Sleepy Hollow (25th Anniversary Screening)

8:00pm - Sunday, Oct 27, 2024

"Villainy wears many masks, none so dangerous as the mask of virtue." The Rio Theatre continues its deep dive into Halloween movie goodness with a 25th Anniversary screening of Tim Burton's ultra-goth, ultra-spooky, ultra-romantic SLEEPY HOLLOW. Based on Washington Irving's classic tale "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," Burton's classic period film (set in 1799) is a perfect vehicle for the director's signature style and aesthetic. Faithful to the dreamy custom-bound world that Irving paints in his story, the film mixes horror, fantasy and romance and features an extraordinary cast of characters that dabble in the supernatural. With Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson. "'Sleepy Hollow' is gorgeous filmmaking that brims over with fun-house thrills and ravishing romance." (Rolling Stone Magazine) "I actually found myself drawn into this old Classics Illustrated material -- enthralled by a time and place so well evoked that the Horseman almost seemed natural there." (Roger Ebert) "An exquisitely mounted effort created to the exact specifications of an adroit director whose sensibility is truly bizarre, 'Sleepy Hollow' is kind of an ultimate Tim Burton movie." (Los Angeles Times) "Burton's film is black and vermilion eye candy for spooky kids everywhere, a goth-tart for the masses." (Austin Chronicle) Sunday, October 27 Doors 7:30 pm | Movie 8:00 pm *Start time subject to change. Phantom of the Paradise (50th Anniversary Screening!)

6:20pm - Monday, Oct 28, 2024

"The music made him do it!" Join us at the Rio Theatre on Monday, October 28 for a Brian De Palma double bill featuring a 50th Anniversary screening of the 1974 rock opera THE PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE followed by the new 4K restoration of CARRIE. De Palma's cult-classic is a fan-favourite rock opera that finds itself somewhere between Phantom Of The Opera and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust. After record producer Swan (Paul Williams, who also wrote the acclaimed score in addition to numerous other 70s staples including A STAR IS BORN's Oscar-winning "Evergreen" and "The Rainbow Connection") steals the music of songwriter Winslow Leach (William Finley) and gives it to one of his bands, Leach sneaks into Swan's offices. Catching Leach, Swan frames him for dealing drugs, which lands him in prison. After Leach breaks out and again attempts to sabotage Swan's empire, an accident crushes his face. Leach then dons a costume and becomes the Phantom, intent on ruining Swan while saving singer Phoenix (legendary scream queen Jessica Harper) from a terrible fate. "A crazy, savage film -- iconoclastic and truly liberating." (TIME Magazine) "It’s a knowing, satirical look at the still-nascent rock music industry, a Faust-inspired riff on the urban legend about singers selling their souls to the devil." (Movie Maker Magazine) "De Palma, who can't tell a plain story, does something that a couple of generations of student and underground filmmakers have been trying to do and nobody else has ever brought off. He creates a new Guignol, in a modern idiom." (New Yorker) "It seems amazing that a film conceived and developed with such sophisticated filmic artistry could indulge in so much broad, even coarse humor. But there's no denying that Phantom of the Paradise is a visual triumph with much exciting music." (Los Angeles Times) As always, audience costumes are very welcome - and encouraged! 10:30pm - Monday, Oct 28, 2024

Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die... It's fun to be a vampire. The Rio Theatre's series of Halloween classics continues on Monday, October 28 with everyone's favourite teen vampire thriller, Joel Schumacher's star-studded (the two Coreys!) pop-culture touchstone THE LOST BOYS. The cult-classic story follows teenage brothers Michael and Sam, who move with their mother to a small town in northern California. With Jason Patric, Corey Haim, Dianne Wiest, Corey Feldman, Kiefer Sutherland, Jami Gertz, and Alex Winter. "'The Lost Boys', in its artless way, asks us to consider that being for ever young isn't a sweet Edwardian evocation of innocence, but a vision of pure hell, like vampirism." (Guardian UK) "That the film works so well is a testament to Joel Schumacher’s pop sensibilities, his slick production design and an iconic soundtrack — Echo & the Bunnymen’s version of 'People Are Strange' is a majestic way to begin a movie." 6:30pm - Tuesday, Oct 29, 2024

From the writing-directing team of Jemaine Clement (FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS) and Taika Waititi (JOJO RABBIT, HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE, THOR: Ragnarok) comes a bloody high-larious tale in which an endearingly un-hip quartet of kiwi vampire friends reveal to us or, rather, to the documentary crew that's filming them, the details of their daily-make that nightly-routine. Ranging in age from 183 to 8,000, and in appearance from adorably youthful to Nosferatu-crusty, they squabble over household chores, struggle to keep up with the latest trends in technology and fashion, antagonize the local werewolves, cruise clubs for lovely ladies, and deal with the rigors of living on a very, very strict diet. Also starring Rhys Darby, Jonathan Brugh, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, Stu Rutherford, and Jackie Van Beek. "Here it is at long last: a truly great vampire comedy. And also the funniest horror film to come out of New Zealand since Braindead." (Empire Magazine) Tuesday, October 29 Doors 6:00 pm | Movie 6:30 pm *Start time subject to change. Please arrive on time. WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS (Jemaine Clement & Taika Waititi, 2015 / 86 mins / 14A) Follow the lives of Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav - three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life's obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood. Hundreds of years old, the vampires are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes, hitting the main artery, and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection, modern society has them struggling with the mundane like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts. The Craft

8:45pm - Tuesday, Oct 29, 2024

Now is the time. This is the hour. Ours is the magic. Ours is the power. Unleash your inner-90's witchy-self and get into the Halloween spirit with a prime time screening of THE CRAFT. Neve Campbell, Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney and Rachel True star as a group of misfit girls on the fringe of their high school crowd who band together to form a unique clique (or, perhaps, "coven") of their own. What starts out as just harmless fun - getting back at those people who'd slight them - soon grows out of control. Also starring Skeet Ulrich, Christine Taylor, and Breckin Meyer. "Set to a banging alt-rock soundtrack, it follows four teenage outcasts who begin dabbling in the dark art of witchcraft, and soon find themselves out of their depth." (NME) "The great strength of 'The Craft' is that it doesn't pass judgment on why the girls are doing what they do... The film's message of female empowerment felt cathartic, but so did its rage." (Refinery29) Tuesday, October 29 Doors 8:15 pm | Movie 8:45 pm *Start time subject to change. Please arrive on time. THE CRAFT (Andrew Fleming, 1996 / 111 mins) | When newcomer Sarah moves to a new city with her family to start a new life, she makes fast friends with some of the girls in her schoool who are just as "on the fringe" as she is. A shared interest in the occult goes further than they expected as they each attain unusual powers. What starts out as good fun soon turns dangerous. [more]

Suspiria

6:30pm - Wednesday, Oct 30, 2024

We're diving deep into Halloween classics with a prime-times creening of Dario Argento's giallo-infused, "candy-coloured," phantasmagoric nightmare of a horror icon SUSPIRIA ("the most terrifying movie ever made!"). This genre-defining cult-classic has been lovingly restored and remastered in glorious 4K - the film's bizarre colour schemes come alive in a whole new way. Buoyed by a phenomenal soundtrack from the Italian band Goblin, SUSPIRIA is "nightmare fuel" for the senses - and can only be truly enjoyed on the big screen... If you dare! Suzy (Jessica Harper) travels to Germany to attend ballet school. When she arrives, late on a stormy night, no one lets her in, and she sees Pat (Eva Axén), another student, fleeing from the school. When Pat reaches her apartment, she is murdered. The next day, Suzy is admitted to her new school, but has a difficult time settling in. She hears noises, and often feels ill. As more people die, Suzy uncovers the terrifying secret history of the place... "It's always fascinating to watch; the thrills and spills are so classy and fast that the movie becomes in effect what horror movies seemed like when you were too young to get in to see them." (Time Out) "The blood pours freely in Argento's classic SUSPIRIA, a giallo horror as grandiose and glossy as it is gory." (Rotten Tomatoes) "From stormy start to fiery finish, it's a stylish, compelling, phantasmagoric movie." "Devil's Night is upon us again." The Rio Theatre's series of Halloween classics continues with a 30th Anniversary "Devil's Night" screening of the stylish, soulful and ultimately haunting, supernaturally romantic revenge fantasy THE CROW - featuring a chilling turn from the late Brandon Lee - on Wednesday, October 30. The night before his wedding, musician Eric Draven (Lee) and his fiancée are brutally murdered by members of a violent inner-city gang. On the anniversary of their death, Eric rises from the grave and assumes the gothic mantle of the Crow, a supernatural avenger. Tracking down the thugs responsible for the crimes and mercilessly murdering them, Eric eventually confronts head gangster Top Dollar (Michael Wincott) to complete his macabre mission. "Despite the visionary brilliance and hip brutality, THE CROW — whose closing dedication reads, 'For Brandon and Eliza' — is saying that love never dies. We’ve heard that before. It’s Lee, with probing intelligence and passionate heart, who moves us to believe it." (Rolling Stone) "Filled with style and dark, lurid energy, THE CROW is an action-packed visual feast that also has a soul in the performance of the late Brandon Lee." John Carpenter's 'Halloween'

6:20pm - Thursday, Oct 31, 2024

Join us at the Rio Theatre on Thursday, October 31 for John Carpenter's original 1978 slasher masterpiece HALLOWEEN... on HALLOWEEN! Jamie Lee Curtis cemented her life-long iconic status as a "Scream Queen" thanks in no small part to her remarkable feature film debut in John Carpenter's original HALLOWEEN, a groundbreaking movie that would go on to spawn countless sequels, several reboots, inspire numerous other filmmakers, and provide untold numbers of nightmares for a generation of movie lovers. The story really begins on a cold Halloween night in 1963, when six year old Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister, Judith, before being locked away for 15 years. But on October 30, 1978, while being transferred for a court date, the 21-year-old Myers steals a car, escapes custody, and returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for his next victims... Also starring Donald Pleasance. "One reason Halloween has aged so well is that it wastes little time on character development, plot, theme or any other elements extraneous to the critical business of sending shudders down your spine." (The NYTimes) "Regardless of how silly you think it all is, this will have you scared witless by the time the end credits roll; low budget horror hog heaven." (Empire Magazine) As always, audience costumes are very welcome - and encouraged! Thursday, October 31 Doors 5:50 pm | Movie 6:20 pm *Start time subject to change. Please arrive on time. HALLOWEEN (John Carpenter, 1978 / 91 mins / 18A) A young boy kills his sister on Halloween of 1963, and is sent to a mental hospital. 15 years later he escapes and returns to his home town in order to wreak havoc. The Exorcist

8:45pm - Thursday, Oct 31, 2024

"The power of Christ compels you!" Five decades after its release, director William Friedkin's supernatural horror classic THE EXORCIST still remains one of the most frightening films ever made. Based on the hugely popular novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty (who also wrote the screenplay), the film was both a massive commercial and critical success, garnering an impressive ten Academy Award nominations (including one for Best Picture). As terrifying today as it was upon its release in 1973, Friedkin's hugely influential movie remains one of the most profitable horror movies (though he prefers you not call it a “horror film,” but rather, a “theological thriller”) ever made. The enduring popularity of THE EXORCIST makes it one of the Rio Theatre's most requested titles, and a divine choice for a Halloween screening! Based loosely on actual events, the story follows 12 year-old Regan (Linda Blair, in a breakout performance), whose increasingly odd behaviour goes beyond what one would normally expect from a pubescent young woman (levitating, speaking in tongues). When her fraught mother (Ellen Burstyn) hits a dead end after seeking medical help, she turns to the Church. A local priest (Jason Miller), is convinced Regan is under the devil's control, and makes a request to perform an exorcism with the help of one of their more experienced experts (a perfectly cast Max von Sydow). "The movie that launched a new era in horror films, and which, for one generation, remains one of the scariest experiences of their lives." (New York Daily News) "The film is a triumph of special effects. Never for a moment--not when the little girl is possessed by the most disgusting of spirits, not when the bed is banging and the furniture flying and the vomit is welling out--are we less than convinced. The film contains brutal shocks, almost indescribable obscenities. That it received an R rating and not the X is stupefying." (Roger Ebert) Thursday, October 31 Doors 8:15 pm | Movie 8:45 pm *Start time subject to change. Please arrive on time. THE EXORCIST (William Friedkin, 1973 / 121 mins / 18 A / Extended Director's Cut) 12-year-old Regan MacNeil begins to adapt an explicit new personality as strange events befall the local area of Georgetown. Her mother becomes torn between science and superstition in a desperate bid to save her daughter, and ultimately turns to her last hope: Father Damien Karras, a troubled priest who is struggling with his own faith. Seven Samurai (4K Restoration)

2:00pm - Saturday, Nov 2, 2024

One of the most thrilling movie epics of all time, SEVEN SAMURAI tells the story of a sixteenth-century village whose desperate inhabitants hire the eponymous warriors to protect them from invading bandits. This three-hour ride from Akira Kurosawa—featuring legendary actors Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura—seamlessly weaves philosophy and entertainment, delicate human emotions and relentless action, into a rich, evocative, and unforgettable tale of courage and hope. A landmark film in Japanese cinema due to its creative and technical achievements, SEVEN SAMURAI has consistently ranked high among both film critics and movie lovers - its influence as both a historical drama and for its phenomenal action sequences as relevant today as upon its initial release in 1954. (It was adapted by Hollywood with western THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN in 1960.) Kurosawa co-wrote, edited, and directed this simple tale set in rural Japan in the late 1500s, and follows a veteran samurai recruited by a farming village to protect them from bandits. In turn, the warrior hires six "ronin" (masterless samurai) to help him in exchange for food (and some useful training). The film culminates in a famous, epic battle scene - best appreciated on the big screen! Starring Toshirô Mifune, Takashi Shimura, and Keiko Tsushima. "The greatest movie ever made about warriors and battle." (Chicago Sun-Times) "Again and again, Kurosawa sends a dark thrill through his audience with a touch of sensuous physical reality." (Time Magazine) Saturday, November 2 Doors 1:30 pm | Movie 2:00 pm *Start time subject to change. Please arrive on time. *Please note: This film screens with a brief intermission. SEVEN SAMURAI "Shichinin no Samurai" (Akira Kurosawa, 1954 / 207 mins / PG / Japanese with English subs) After he falls on hard times, a veteran samurai answers a village's request for protection from bandits. The samurai gathers six others to help him teach the people how to defend themselves, and in exchange the villagers provide the soldiers with food. A giant battle occurs when 40 bandits attack the village. [more]
