Porco Rosso

Porco Rosso

6:45pm - Saturday, Jul 2, 2016

Join us at the Rio Theatre for another classic Studio Ghibli title on Saturday, July 2. Director Hayao Miyazaki‘s sixth film, PORCO ROSSO (known in Japan as “Crimson Pig”) is an endearing comedy set against the backdrop of Italy duwing World War 1, and follows the adventures of a fighter ace living as a freelance bounty hunter, chasing “air pirates” in the Adriatic Sea. But this is no ordinary aviator – he has been cursed with the head of a pig. Once called “Marco Pagot,” he is now known to the world as “Porco Rosso” (Italian for “Red Pig”).

This fun, family-friendly film is based on Japanese comic Hikōtei Jidai, a three-part watercolor manga by director Miyazaki, and stars the voices of Shūichirō Moriyama, Tokiko Kato, Akemi Okamura and Akio Ōtsuka. **Please note: Porco Rosso screens in Japanese with English subtitles.

PORCO ROSSO “Kurenai no Buta” (Hayao Miyazaki, 1992 / 94 mins / PG / English subtitles) | In Italy in the 1930s, sky pirates in biplanes terrorize wealthy cruise ships as they sail the Adriatic Sea. The only pilot brave enough to stop the scourge is the mysterious “Porco Rosso” (Shuichiro Moriyama), a former World War I flying ace who was somehow turned into a pig during the war. As he prepares to battle the pirate crew’s American ace, Porco Rosso enlists the help of spunky girl mechanic Fio Piccolo (Akemi Okamura) and his longtime friend Madame Gina (Tokiko Kato).
