Kurt 'n Carpenter Triple Feature: The Thing (1982) + Escape From New York + Big Trouble in Little China

6:15pm - Saturday, Aug 13, 2016

All Kurt.
All Carpenter.
All. Night. Long.

Join us for a whole evening dedicated to one of our all-time favourite cinematic couplings, director John Carpenter and his leading man "muse," Kurt Russell. Our "Kurt n' Carpenter Triple Feature" includes THE THING (1982), ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, and BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. See one, or see 'em all. (But no matter what you do on Saturday, August 13 - See one of these classics on our big screen!)

We’re kicking off our “Kurt n’ Carpenter Triple Feature” with a perfect summer slice of wintry horror that may leave you feeling… A little cold. Kurt Russell delivers a career-high performance in THE THING, a truly frightening story about scientists in the Antarctic who are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills. Carpenter’s remake of Howard Hawke‘s 1951 classic is, perhaps, a more bleak, tense and frightening sci-fi thriller that delivers some truly memorable practical and makeup effects along the way. A definite big screen must-see!

“The Thing is a peerless masterpiece of relentless suspense, retina-wrecking visual excess and outright, nihilistic terror.” (Empire Magazine)

“The Thing is one of [Carpenter’s] greatest moments, creating a terrifying atmosphere of claustrophobia, suspense and paranoia. And Kurt Russell is as good as he’s ever been, wearing one of the best beards in movie history.” – Total Film

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK is their epic 1981 action film collaboration that sees director John Carpenter‘s “muse” Kurt Russell as the iconic, eye-patch-wearing Snake Plissken. Set in a dystopic 1997 in which a major war between the United States and the Soviet Union is concluding, the entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a giant maximum security prison. When Air Force One is hijacked and crashes into the island, the president (Donald Pleasence) is taken hostage by a group of inmates where Snake Plissken, a former Special Forces soldier turned criminal, is recruited to retrieve him in exchange for his own freedom. Also starring Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton, and Adrienne Barbeau.

It’s all in the reflexes…

Our "Kurt n’ Carpenter Triple Feature" wouldn't be complete without a 30th Anniversary screening of the insanely fun and totally 80s martial arts action classic BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. Carpenter “muse” Kurt Russell stars as all-American trucker Jack Burton, who agrees to take his friend Wang Chi on a trip to the airport to pick up his beautiful, green-eyed fiancee – but along the way finds himself involved in a crazy, supernatural ancient Chinese battle that pits the forces of good against evil. Russell really shines here as an (almost) over-the-top, lovably macho leading man with a penchant for cartoonish dialogue; between his scene-stealing performance and the glorious levels of movie craziness on screen, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA still feels like a cross between a B-movie and a comic book – in the best way possible. Also starring Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun and James Hong.

“Brimming with energy and packed with humor, Big Trouble in Little China distills kung fu B-movies as affectionately as it subverts them.” (Rotten Tomatoes)
