Raging Bull (Double Bill option)

Raging Bull (Double Bill option)

6:30pm - Wednesday, Aug 17, 2016

Join us at the Rio Theatre for another title in our summer series of classic films, director Martin Scorsese's RAGING BULL. An indisputable cinematic triumph, this black and white biopic is one of the greatest films of the 1980s, and frequently described as Scorsese's "magnum opus." The ambitious sports drama follows the life story of Italian-American boxer Jake LaMotta (Robert De Niro, in one of his Golden Globe and Oscar-winning performances), a former middleweight champion, whose reputation for tenacity and success in the ring was offset by his self-destructive troubled domestic life. La Motta was full of rage, sexual jealousy, and crippling suspicion - particularly towards his wife (Cathy Moriarty) and manager/brother (Joe Pesci) - which, in the end, left him destitute, alone, and seeking redemption. Also staring Nicholas Colasanto, Theresa Saldana and Frank Vincent.

"This is not a film about boxing. This is a film about the human condition and about cinema itself." (Empire Magazine)

"Arguably Martin Scorsese's and Robert De Niro's finest film, RAGING BILL is often painful to watch, but it's a searing, powerful work about an unsympathetic hero." (Rotten Tomatoes)

RAGING BULL (Martin Scorsese, 1980 / 129 mins / 18A) When Jake LaMotta steps into a boxing ring and obliterates his opponent, he's a prizefighter. But when he treats his family and friends the same way, he's a ticking time bomb, ready to go off at any moment. Though LaMotta wants his family's love, something always seems to come between them. Perhaps it's his violent bouts of paranoia and jealousy. This kind of rage helped make him a champ, but in real life, he winds up in the ring alone.

TAXI DRIVER (Martin Scorsese, 1976 / 113 mins / 18A) Robert De Niro stars as Travis Bickle in this oppressive psychodrama about a Vietnam veteran who rebels against the decadence and immorality of big city life in New York while working the nightshift as a taxi driver.
