The Lobster

The Lobster

9:00pm - Monday, Feb 4, 2019

Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos is riding yet another huge wave of critical and commercial success thanks to his latest surreal comedy, THE FAVOURITE, which has been dominating the festival and the awards circuits - it's currently nominated for a whopping ten Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture. Prior to the success of THE FAVOURITE, he first gained attention for the astounding, indelible arthouse hit DOGTOOOTH (2009).

Given that February bleeds romance (thanks, Valentine's Day), we felt the time was nigh to toast Lanthimos with a screening of 2015's sweet, surreal and very strange THE LOBSTER, a sort of "non-rom-com" set in an off-kilter, dystopian society where single people must find mates within 45 days - or risk being transformed into animals. Starring Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman (who are both Oscar nominees for their turns in THE FAVOURITE), Colin Farrell (who would later appear in 2017's THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER), John C. Reilly, Léa Seydoux and Ben Whishaw.

"A wickedly funny protest against societal preference for nuclear coupledom that escalates, by its own sly logic, into a love story of profound tenderness and originality." (Variety)

"Lanthimos' unsettling tour de force reminds us of how chained to coupledom dignity remains at both the private and public level." (Salon.com)
