The Souvenir
Set in the 1980's, British writer-director Joanna Hogg's (ARCHIPELAGO, UNRELATED) fourth film THE SOUVENIR concerns itself with a shy film student (Honor Swinton Byrne, in a breakout performance) who begins finding her voice as an artist while navigating a turbulent courtship with a charismatic, but untrustworthy, man. She defies her protective mother (Tilda Swinton) and concerned friends as she slips deeper and deeper into an intense, emotionally fraught relationship which comes dangerously close to destroying her dreams. With Tom Burke.
"The Souvenir feels like a whispered confidence, an intimate disclosure that shouldn’t be betrayed because it isn’t really yours."
(The NYTimes)
"The movie is never not fascinating." (Vulture)
"A masterpiece that captures uncomfortable truths... Joanna Hogg’s fourth feature deals with the formation of her own artistic consciousness and refuses to mythologize any of the messy, complicated elements." (NOW Toronto)
"Made by a filmmaker in command of her craft and a star perfectly matched with the material, The Souvenir is a uniquely impactful coming of age drama." (Rotten Tomatoes)
"This is not a movie that lets life simply play out as it is or was - it is instead a collection of memories, some sharp as shards but others smoothed down." (The Globe and Mail)
