Pee Wee's Big Adventure (35th Anniversary Screening)
"I know you are, but what am I?"
Tell 'em, "Large Marge sent ya" to the Rio Theatre this July, as we tip our hat to one of the ultimate touchstones for 80's kids, Pee Wee Herman, with a special 35th Anniversary screening of PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE. Pee-Wee Herman (aka Paul Reubens) was already something of an underground, cult-comedian prior to the release of the film in 1985, which quickly launched him into the pop-culture stratosphere. The sweet story about a man-child on a cross-country search to retrieve his beloved bike, stolen in broad daylight, from the basement of The Alamo. The weird, quirky premise perfectly played up his persona's endearing, oddball charm, and proved a hit with kids, who would then go one to spend years of their childhood perfecting impressions of his voice, mannerisms, and dance moves. The film is also notable as the feature debut of Tim Burton, (who co-wrote the film with the late, great Phil Hartman) whose own unique, signature visual style is on full display alongside a memorable soundtrack from Danny Elfman. With Elizabeth Daily, Diane Salinger.
And yes... There'll be a drink on special. We don't actually have to tell you what it is though, do we....?
"Tim Burton's first feature revels in the weird, the unpredictable, the infantile and the absurd. A dazzling debut." (Empire Magazine)
