Jean-Luc Godard's 'Breathless' (60th Anniversary Restoration)

Jean-Luc Godard's 'Breathless' (60th Anniversary Restoration)

6:30pm - Wednesday, Dec 1, 2021

Join us at the Rio Theatre for screenings of a film that has earned its place in film history, Jean-Luc Godard's seminal French New Wave classic BREATHLESS, which has been beautifully restored for its 60th Anniversary.

Adapted from an original treatment from cineaste auteur Francois Truffaut Godard directed the film from his own original screenplay. Jean-Paul Belmondo stars as small-time crook Michel, who steals a car and murders a policeman. While on the run, he reconnects with Patricia (Jean Seberg), a journalism student living in Paris, and tries to convince her to go on the lam with him.

“There are precious few titles in the history of cinema that can truly be called ‘revolutionary,’ and Godard’s 'Breathless' is one of those few – it gave us a new way of making movies and a new way of thinking about them, a new rhythm of life, a new way of looking at ourselves. And, like all great pictures, it seems as fresh and startling today as it did 60 years ago.” (Martin Scorsese)

"REVELATORY! This restoration provided a welcome jolt of the new!" (The New Yorker)

"Fifty years on, still the newest movie in town!" (Vogue)

"A thrilling reminder of how playful Godard could be." (Village Voice)

"'Breathless' was the first foreign language film that really felt dangerous. Watching Godard's masterpiece for the first time really made me feel like I was in the hands of an unstable narrator: anything could happen at any moment. There were no rules. It felt like cinematic punk rock. Breathless shattered all the conventions I had been raised to believe were a necessary ingredient to foreign language cinema, and the film has not lost an ounce of its potency. The hotel sequence for me is still the most accurate reflection I have ever seen on screen of what it is like to be part of a couple. The film oozes with style, from Belmondo's dangling ashy cigarette to Seberg's closely cropped hairdo, to music and the jump-cut editorial style.” (Eli Roth)
