The loss of trailblazing actor, social and civil rights activist, author, filmmaker, and diplomat Sidney Poitier is felt by legions of movie-lovers around the world. His legacy, and its impact on cinema so deep as to be, perhaps, beyond measure. Without question, his star shone bright in his many thoughtfully, polished characters projected onscreen but they paled in comparison to the role he played in the lives of generations of those of us who basked in his very real, and endlessly inspirational shine.

We felt it fitting to salute this cinematic icon on the first day of Black History Month with a screening of one of his most memorable and iconic performances, in director Stanley Kramer's GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER.

Poitier shines as the widowed Dr. John Prentice, who is set to meet his new in-laws following a whirlwind romance with a young woman he meets on a Hawaiian vacation.

Of course... This is 1967, and Dr. Prentice's fiancee's very white parents, and his own very Black parents, are all about to have a crash course in modern love and interracial marriage in a country and in an era where anti-miscegenation laws were still very much a reality. With Spencer Tracy (in his final onscreen performance), Katharine Hepburn (who took home Oscar gold for her performance), Katharine Houghton, Roy Glenn, Beah Richards, and Isabel Sanford.

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (Stanley Kramer, 1967 / 108 mins / PG) When Joanna Drayton, a free-thinking white woman, and black doctor John Prentice become engaged, they travel to San Francisco to meet her parents. Matt Drayton and his wife Christina are wealthy liberals who must confront the latent racism the coming marriage arouses. Also attending the Draytons' dinner are Prentice's parents, who vehemently disapprove of the relationship.
