Starlet (Featuring Sean Baker Q&A)
Writer-director Sean Baker (RED ROCKET, THE FLORIDA PROJECT, TANGERINE) joins us live (via Skype) for a double bill that includes a screening of his latest acclaimed feature, RED ROCKET, followed by his 2013 debut film, STARLET. (Besides being drawn from the same creative mind, the two films occupy the same cinematic universe... As Mr. Baker will explain in the Q&A!)
STARLET follows the story of a young woman names Jane, (Dree Hemingway) who finds a fortune stashed in a yard-sale thermos and befriends the crotchety oldster (Besedka Johnson) from whom she bought it.
"You may have never heard of Sean Baker, but he's one of the most astute and least sentimental chroniclers of life on the fringes working in film today." (The Wrap)
"A strikingly unsentimental study in female friendship between unmoored souls in L.A.'s bleached, glamour-challenged San Fernando Valley." (Entertainment Weekly)
"This is confident, engrossing storytelling, and the actors are terrific." (Chicago Reader)
"'Starlet' is achingly sad, shrewdly funny, and shockingly honest." (Film Threat)
"The film itself deserves praise for its portraits of these two women and the different worlds they inhabit." (Roger Ebert)
