Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) is an emotionally stunted and softspoken radio journalist who travels the country interviewing a variety of kids about their thoughts concerning their world and their future. Soon, Johnny finds himself tasked with caring for his young nephew Jesse, whose father struggles with bipolar disorder and is in the grips of a manic episode. The smart and sensitive young charge offers Johnny a a new perspective and, as the pair travel from state to state, effectively turns the emotional tables on him.
