The Commitments
Get your Irish on, Vancouver! We're getting in the St. Patrick's Day mood a day early at the Rio Theatre with one of the most beloved Irish films (with one of the best soundtracks) of all time... On our big screen, with our even bigger sound. (And yes... There will be drink specials.)
The late, great filmmaker Sir Alan Parker’s (PINK FLOYD: THE WALL, FAME, MIDNIGHT EXPRESS) THE COMMITMENTS brought Roddy Doyle’s beloved novela about Ireland”s “Hardest Working Band” playing Dublin Soul to the world in 1991, and it’s remained a beloved crowd-pleaser ever since. Be prepared to drink up and rock out to one of the hands-down best music movies of all time, featuring the soulful classics of Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Otis Reading and more.
"This is probably Alan Parker's best film, in part because it's one of his most modest." (Chicago Reader)
"Foul-mouthed, fast-talking and very funny, this is Parker's best to date." (Time Out)

THE COMMITMENTS (Alan Parker, 1991 / 118 mins / 18A ) | Jimmy Rabbitte, a self-proclaimed promoter, decides to organize an R&B group to fill the musical void in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland. The band comes together but ends up consisting entirely of white musicians who have little experience with the genre. Even though their raw talent and lofty aspirations gain the group notoriety, the pitfalls of fame began to tear at their newfound friendships as they prepare for their big show.
