Flee
FLEE tells the story of Amin Nawabi as he grapples with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years, one that threatens to derail the life he has built for himself and his soon to be husband. Recounted mostly through animation to director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, he tells for the first time the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2021 and currently nominated for three Academy Awards (including Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Foreign Language Film) FLEE pushes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking to present a moving memoir of self-discovery.
"The year's most inventive animated adventure mixes graphic design with documentary realism and puts hallucinatory brilliance at the service of understanding the continuing psychic damage of war. You'll never forget it." (ABC News)
"A triumph, not only of the filmed variety but a human one, as well." (Detroit News)
"Documentary realism rarely goes hand-in-hand with animated un-reality, but in Jonas Poher Rasmussen's Flee, those two aesthetic worlds collide and create a feeling of being unmoored." (Observer)
"An intimate portrait of the lasting traumas of displacement and one of the most humane films of the year." (Los Angeles Times)
"The film, heightened by haunting, sometimes surreal animated sequences, helps us understand why solitude threatened to be his permanent state, and how a refugee's flight can devastate the strongest spirit and shut down a tender one." (Wall Street Journal)
