Parallel Mothers
Iconic Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar's latest contemporary drama centers on two women, Janis (Penélope Cruz, in an Oscar-nominated performance) and Ana, who encounter each other in a hospital room, where they are going to give birth. Both are single and became pregnant by accident. Janis, middle-aged, doesn't regret it and she is exultant. The other, Ana, an adolescent, is scared, repentant and traumatized. Janis tries to encourage her while they move like sleepwalkers along the hospital corridors. The few words they exchange in these hours will create a very close link between the two, which by chance develops and complicates, and changes their lives in a decisive way. With Milena Smit, Israel Elejalde.
"A brilliant forum for Penélope Cruz's talent, Parallel Mothers reaffirms the familiar pleasures of Almodóvar's filmmaking while proving he's still capable of growth." (Rotten Tomatoes)
"Penelope Cruz may not be the favorite in the Best Actress race, but her performance in Pedro Almodóvar’s film is, well, unparalleled." (The Ringer)
"I was both fairly sure what Parallel Mothers might be, and eager to be surprised. Thankfully, Almodóvar delivers on both fronts – as Almodóvar should almost always be entrusted to do." (Globe and Mail)
"Pedro Almodóvar juggles comedy and drama to terrifically entertaining ends, aided by a tip-top Penélope Cruz. It's hard to think of a more exciting actor-director partnership working today." (Empire Magazine)
