John Carpenter's 'Escape From New York'
9:00pm - Sunday, Feb 5, 2023
In celebration of John Carpenter's 1976 gritty action thriller ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 getting the 4K Restoration treatment, we thought we'd also give it the double bill treatment with another Carpenter classic that his fans can't get enough of - ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK!
See one, or see 'em both for one sweet price!
John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, the epic 1981 action film featuring his 80's-era "muse" Kurt Russell as the iconic eye-patch-wearing hero Snake Plissken, was gorgeously restored in 2018 - and it's finally headed to East Vancouver, to take over the Rio Theatre's screen starting Saturday, November 7.
Set in a dystopic 1997 in which a major war between the United States and the Soviet Union is concluding, the entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a giant maximum security prison. When Air Force One is hijacked and crashes into the island, the president (Donald Pleasence) is taken hostage by a group of inmates where Snake Plissken, a former Special Forces soldier turned criminal, is recruited to retrieve him in exchange for his own freedom. Also starring Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton, and Adrienne Barbeau.
"The movie proudly wears its affection for crusty Sergio Leone archetypes and countdown-clock suspense sequences; Carpenter was Tarantino long before Tarantino was." (Time Out New York)
"Carpenter’s vision, presented in a beautiful 4K remaster, still impresses with its sense of time, place and attitude." (WeAreCult.Rocks)
