Living
London, 1953. Mr. Williams, a veteran civil servant, is an important cog within the city's bureaucracy as it struggles to rebuild in the aftermath of World War II. Buried under paperwork at the office and lonely at home, his life has long felt empty and meaningless. Then a devastating medical diagnosis forces him to take stock, and to try and grasp some fulfillment before it passes permanently beyond reach. Influenced by a local decadent and a vibrant woman, he continues to search for meaning until a simple revelation gives him a purpose to create a legacy for the next generation.
Adapted from Akira Kurosawa's 1952 film IKIRU by acclaimed screenwriter Kazuo Ishiguru (THE REMAINS OF THE DAY, THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD), LIVING has garnered some of the highest praise of veteran actor Bill Nighy's career (including Oscar, BAFTA, and SAG nods), as well as an Oscar nomination for Ishiguru's script.
"A little movie about big topics, Living takes on nothing less than life itself and features a quiet, note-perfect performance from Bill Nighy." (Detroit News)
"Living is even further removed from the The Death of Ivan Ilyich than Kurosawa's film. It is even smaller and more intimate, and much of its suppressed wonder comes from a career-best performance from Nighy." (Austin Chronicle)
"The quietly powerful Living defies expectations at every turn." (Baltimore Magazine)
"A worthy reimagining of Kurosawa’s drama—and one that features, courtesy of star Bill Nighy, as superb a performance as you’re likely to see in 2022." (The Daily Beast)
