I Know What You Did Last Summer
In 1996, screenwriter Kevin Williamson knocked it out of the proverbial "teens in a slasher movie" park, thanks to SCREAM (and the genius of horror icon Wes Craven, who directed it). Williams would go on to destroy any notions about the so-called "sophomore slump" with 1997's monster hit I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, a film that helped to not only further establish and revitalize a slasher revival, but also launch the careers of its four relatively unknown stars.
Loosely based on the novel of the same name by Lois Duncan, Williamson's playfully satiric and self-referential tone is perfectly suited to offer a fresh take on a familiar genre trope. The film follows four teenage friends—Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), and Barry Cox (Ryan Phillippe)—as they evaded a hook-wielding stalker one year after accidentally hitting a man with their car on the night of their high school graduation. With Johnny Galecki, Anne Heche, Bridgette Wilson.
"'I Know What You Did Last Summer' is gory enough for the devotees and has story enough for everyone else." (New York Daily News)
"... fun, energetic and fairly scary." (Los Angeles Times)
"...this appetiser proves that nouveau horror is alive and kicking hard." (Empire Magazine)
