Mad Max 3: Beyond Thunderdome
"We don't need another hero..."
Join us at the Rio Theatre on Friday, June 9 as we pay tribute to a true icon, the incomparable Tina Turner, with a screening of MAD MAX 3: BEYOND THUNDERDOME.
In George Miller's third installment of the franchise, Turner not only steals the show as the cunning, tyrannical villain Aunty Entity, but she also created two original songs for the movie: "One of the Living," which plays over the opening credits, and "We Don't Need Another Hero," which plays in the closing credits. (Of note: Both songs are complete and total bangers, the former earning her a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 1986, and the latter becoming a commercial success as well as receiving a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Original Song.)
Aunty Entity rules a desert trading post called Bartertown, a post-apocalyptic community emulative of the wild west, a haven for scum and criminal held together by a frail rule of law. In this desolate place, civilization perseveres by harvesting methane for energy and justice is served through violence. At the beginning of the film, wandering Max (Mel Gibson) arrives in the town looking for his stolen vehicle, and seeks shelter. He makes an impression on Aunty with his brute strength and becomes embroiled in a power struggle. She then recruits him into killing the methane miners' muscle, thus quelling a labor rebellion. When he escapes with his life, just, back in the desert he discovers an oasis populated by children.
"There is something to get excited about in this third chapter of the Mad Max series: the powerhouse presence of Tina Turner." (People Magazine)
"The action thrums away happily, the performances crackle, and the movie proves properly thought out top to tail, gathering up a mythic quality." (Empire Magazine)
"An astonishing display of virtuoso cinema that is destined to take its place among the most vivid and freshly imagined fist-to-groin contests in the medium's history." (Time Magazine)
