PIERROT LE FOU (Jea-Luc Godard, 1965 / 110 mins / 14A / French with English subtitles) Ferdinand, unhappily married and recently fired from his job, abandons his family and runs off to the Riviera with the enigmatic Marianne. Ferdinand, whom Marianne calls “Pierrot,” tries to find artistic fulfillment between bouts of criminal adventure, but keeps getting entangled in Marianne’s violent life.
LA HAINE "Hate" (Mathieu Kassovitz, 1996 / 98 mins / 18A / French with English subs) When a young Arab is arrested and beaten unconscious by police, a riot erupts in the notoriously violent suburbs outside of Paris. Three of the victim's peers - a Jew, an African, and an Arab - wander aimlessly about their home turf in the aftermath of the violence as they try to come to grips with their outrage over the brutal incident. After one of the men finds a police officer's discarded weapon, their night seems poised to take a bleak turn.
FANTASTIC PLANET "La Planète sauvage" (René Laloux, 1973, 72 mins / PG / French with English subs) This futuristic story takes place on a faraway planet where giants rule, and oppressed humanoids rebel against the machine-like leaders.
