The Rio Theatre is proud to welcome World Coffee Events with their first tour of a COFFEE FILM FESTIVAL! Featuring established coffee films and community-created shorts, the day is open to the public but curated for the specialty coffee lover. Full-day tickets are now available for this unique cinematic experience, produced by an organization driven by coffee, community, and creativity! Partial Day Passes will also be available (as supplies last) at the film festival itself.

Aroma of Heaven

Armed with nothing but innate curiosity and a small crew, the filmmakers endured a polemic journey through the world of Indonesian coffee, which has a history rooted more than 300 years ago. We started compiling this movie in 2011. The filmmakers spent the last few years meeting with a variety of thought leaders as well as traditional farmers – remarkable men and women from the worlds of science, philosophy, academia, anthropology, business and agriculture. Tradition, culture, arts, faith and indigenous beliefs contributed to Indonesia’s coffee history. More than just describing the origin of the flavor of coffee, more than just trends and lifestyle of coffee drinking, Biji Kopi Indonesia is an utterly engaging documentary film that poses the provocative question: how well do we know the coffee that we consume every day? The result is up to the viewer themselves to answer.

A Small Section of the World

How many hands touch your morning coffee before you? How many of those hands are women’s? A Small Section of the World is a documentary film that tells the inspirational story about a group of women from a remote farming region of Costa Rica whose ideas sparked a revolution in the coffee growing world. After a crisis, the men of the village left in search of work and the women came together to imagine a different future for themselves, their families and their community by building their own coffee mill. They are the first women’s run micro-mill in their country. The film follows the impact of this remarkable story of perseverance as it touches lives around the globe and shows how these resourceful women overcame adversity to change the culture within their small section of the world. A story of passion and tenacity, A Small Section of the World is about women’s empowerment, the risky business of coffee and how a cup of coffee can transform lives. Inspired by the story, multi-Grammy winner and the best selling female rock performer of all time, Alanis Morissette contributed an original anthem to the film, co-written with Costa Rican artist and Grammy winner Carlos Tapado Vargas.

A Film About Coffee

A Film About Coffee follows the production of coffee from farms in Honduras and harvests in Rwanda to its global consumption. Listening to farmers, buyers, roasters and baristas about the crop’s economic and environmental implications both locally and abroad, the narrative travels to coffee shops in Tokyo, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and New York, with stops in between. Dropping in on artisanal cafes to investigate how each prepares its own unique cup, the film opens a window into the little-understood world of specialty coffee.

Caffeinated

Caffeinated tells the story of coffee through the perspectives of people who have dedicated their lives to it. At every step of the process, it’s the hands that planted the seed, that roasted the beans, that crafted the drink that makes every cup of coffee a story worth telling.

Full Day Festival Pass includes screening of all four feature films, all selected original short films, and all day access to the festival. Your Pass also includes tastings and interactive experiences.

PARTIAL DAY FESTIVAL PASS $15

Partial Day Passes will only be available on site at the film festival, pending availability. Partial Day Passes will include screening of short films, access to the festival during the chosen day part (early session or late session), and screening of the two (2) feature films included in the early or late session.
