Eileen

Eileen

3:45pm - Thursday, Jan 4, 2024

Based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Ottessa Moshfegh, EILEEN is a moody, morbidly ghoulish and deliciously pulpy neo-noir maze of a movie that evokes the best Hitchcockian suspense thrillers.

Eileen (Thomasin McKenzie, in a breakthrough performance) is a peculiar young woman -- aloof and unfazed by the gloomy nature of her job at the local youth prison. But something in her changes the day that the new counsellor, Dr. Rebecca St. John (Anne Hathaway) arrives. She is instantly captivated by Rebecca's glamorous, enigmatic presence. As the two women grow closer, Eileen is inspired to explore new facets of her own personality and desires. But her metamorphosis takes a twisted turn when Rebecca reveals a dark secret -- throwing Eileen onto a much more sinister path.

"There’s no lesson here, no revelation, no good vibes to wander away with. Spiky and cold, it’s a bitter holiday treat." (New York Times)

"The thrill of 'Eileen' lies in how Thomasin McKenzie plays off the film’s inciting spark, a blonde-bobbed enigma played by Anne Hathaway." (Independent UK)

"As Thomasin McKenzie begins to flex even more of her extremely well-honed actorly chops, Anne Hathaway shows us that her ice-cold-blonde exterior houses an even chillier soul." (Rolling Stone)

"A film that is by turns darkly comic and disturbing, both sensations brought into vivid, caustic relief by the film’s mesmerizing star." (Washington Post)
