Released in 1987, audience favourite features Cher (in what may be her best onscreen performance, and the role that won her a Best Actress Oscar) in a revelatory turn as the dowdy, frumpy, and all outta luck Italian-American widow Loretta, who accepts a marriage proposal from her doltish boyfriend, Johnny (Danny Aiello), a man she does not love, before managing to somehow fall head-over-heels for his younger brother, Ronny (Nicolas Cage, never better). Though Loretta tries to resist his "wolfish" charms, Ronny (who lost his hand in an accident he blames on his brother, and as a result has no love for him) pursues her while Johnny is out of the country dealing with their ailing mother in Italy. As Loretta begins to fall hard for Ronny, she blossoms into a new woman, her love a catalyst for transformation - and she comes to learn that she's not the only one in her family with a secret romance. MOONSTRUCK (Norman Jewison, 1987 / 102 mins / PG) No sooner does Italian-American widow Loretta accept a marriage proposal from her doltish boyfriend, Johnny, than she finds herself falling for his younger brother, Ronny. David Lynch's iconic WILD AT HEART features one of our favourite onscreen cinematic couples, notably our man Nicolas Cage (in fine form; sporting an iconic, snakeskin jacket that represents a symbol of individuality, and a belief in personal freedom) and Laura Dern as young lovers Sailor and Lula, forced to go on the run from the variety of weirdos that Lula's mom has hired to kill Sailor. Also starring Diane Ladd (Dern's mother!), Willem Dafoe, Crispin Glover, Harry Dean Stanton, Sherilyn Fenn and Isabella Rossellini.
