The Doom Generation (4K Restoration)

11:15pm - Friday, Jun 21, 2024

The Rio Theatre's Friday Late Night Movie series continues on June 21 with Gregg Araki's fifth feature, the 1995 dark satire THE DOOM GENERATION. Billed as, "A Heterosexual Movie by Gregg Araki," the film is the second installment in the director's trilogy known as the Teenage Apocalypse film trilogy, preceded by TOTALLY FUCKED UP (1993) and followed by NOWEHERE (1997).

Jordan White and Amy Blue pick up a handsome drifter named Xavier Red. Red tends to create combustible situations -- for example, a trip to a convenience store leads to a clerk getting decapitated. Afterward, the trio voyages through small-town America, where Amy is accosted by various men claiming to be her lovers, and she and Jordan find themselves drawn to Xavier. But can any amount of sex lift the sense of doom hanging over them? With James Duval, Rose McGowan, Johnathon Schaech.

"While most filmmakers aim to create films that are the pinnacle of their genre, Araki is comfortable exploring a genre's very bottom, its nadir." (The Stranger)

"A nihilistic comedy about a trio of alienated youngsters, pic is bold not only in its art design, but also in its narrative and tone, a mixture of satire and horror with heavy dosage of steamy sex and macabre violence." (Variety)

"Imagine 'Natural Born Killers' with a sense of humour." (Time Out)
