Pretty In Pink

"BLANE?! That's a major appliance! That's not a name."
Team 80's is up to bat and the Rio Theatre is bringing in heavy hitter, PRETTY IN PINK, starring 80's Brat Pack icons Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, and Jon Cryer. (The jury's still out on whether James Spader makes the cut.)
PRETTY IN PINK is firmly established in the 80's teen canon, and while many people consider it one of John Hughes' films, it was actually directed by Howard Deutch (SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL, THE GREAT OUTDOORS). The film definitely does have Hughes' signature touch, as it was written by him specifically as a showcase for his muse and frequent collaborator, Molly Ringwald (who also appeared in SIXTEEN CANDLES and THE BREAKFAST CLUB). The film was named after a song by the Psychedelic Furs, and the film's soundtrack, which has been acclaimed as "among the most brilliant in modern cinema", features a re-recorded version of the song. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's "If You Leave" became an international hit and charted at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 in May 1986.
"Although "Pretty in Pink" contains several scenes that are a great deal more dramatic, my favorite moments were the quietest ones, in which nothing was being said because a boy was trying to get up the courage to ask a girl out on a date, and she knew it, and he knew it, and still nothing was happening." (Roger Ebert)
"Delightful... The film is buoyed by a captivating performance by Ringwald, who has an unerring ability to share her character's emotions with an audience, as if we were eavesdropping behind her makeup mirror." (Los Angeles Times)
"These kids have a bumpy ride, but this is one film that identifies with their passions instead of indulging them, giving us a perfect back-seat view of kids out cruising, not for kicks but for a hard-earned sense of pride." (Rotten Tomatoes)

PRETTY IN PINK (Howard Deutch, 1986 / 97 mins / PG) Andie is an outcast, hanging out either with her older boss, who owns the record store where she works, or her quirky high school classmate Duckie, who has a crush on her. When one of the rich and popular kids at school, Blane, asks Andie out, it seems too good to be true. As Andie starts falling for Blane, she begins to realize that dating someone from a different social sphere is not easy.
