Pan's Labyrinth

The Rio Theatre's series of Y2K classics continues on August 19 with a screening of Guillermo del Toro's phantasmagorical PAN'S LABYRINTH.

Set just after the Spanish Civil War in 1944, del Toro's protagonist is bookish young Ofelia, whose forthcoming adventure recalls a more hauntind, daunting Alice in her Wonderland. As Ofelia's mother lays pregnant and bedridden with the child of her new husband, a brutally sadistic military man, the isolated young girl finds ways to entertain herself at the new family's home in the Spanish countryside. Her imagination (or is it?) takes hold and leads her to an elaborate new world, a stone labyrinth presided over by the mythical faun Pan.

"It's so audacious and so technically accomplished, and arrives here garlanded with so many radiant superlatives, that I wish I liked it more." (The Guardian UK)

"So breathtaking in its artistic ambition, so technically accomplished, so morally expansive, so fully realized that it defies the usual critical blather. See it, and celebrate that rare occasion when a director has the audacity to commit cinema." (Washington Post)

"'Pan's Labyrinth' is 'Alice in Wonderland' for grown-ups, with the horrors of both reality and fantasy blended together into an extraordinary, spellbinding fable." (Rotten Tomatoes)
