Josie and the Pussycats
The Rio Theatre's deep-dive into Y2K classics continues on August 28 with the locally-lensed cult-classic musical comedy, JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS.
Josie (Rachael Leigh Cook), Melody (Tara Reid) and Val (Rosario Dawson) are three small-town girl musicians determined to take their rock band out of their garage and straight to the top, while remaining true to their look, style and sound. They get a record deal which brings fame and fortune but soon realize they are pawns of two people who want to control the youth of America. They must clear their names, even if it means losing fame and fortune. With Alan Cumming, Parker Posey.
"In addition to the absolutely jerkin soundtrack, 'Josie and the Pussycats' should be remembered for its incredibly smart script. There are so many levels to dissect in this story. On the surface, you have a fun 98-minute movie musical about an enduring friendship. Upon digging deeper, you get a commentary on consumerism, conformity, and the extremes people will go to reach peak levels of both. The meta gags are so expertly scattered throughout the film that you need multiple viewings to take them all in... The real legacy of 'Josie and the Pussycats' is the fact that it was so ahead of its time that it basically told us the future." (Geek Anything)
Come watch a special queer summer screening of Josie and the Pussycats hosted by actor LivHewson (YELLOWJACKETS) and filmmaker Ally Pankiw (I USED TO BE FUNNY). Don’t forget your cat ears and, well, honk if you love pussy….cats!
