The Babadook (10th Anniversary Screening)
The Rio Theatre's series of Halloween classics continues with a 10th Anniversary screening of Jennifer Kent's critically acclaimed (not to mention terrifying) take on every parent's worst nightmare, THE BABADOOK.
Released in 2014, the Australian indie horror film struck an immediate nerve among genre lovers, and in the decade since has emerged into its well-deserved status as both a feminist cult-classic and one that speak to subversive notions surrounding homophobia and "otherness," with the film's oddball, top-hatted villain being embraced as an (unlikely) LGBT icon.
"A deftly inventive and psychologically charged horror story that trades on the ways in which the prospect of maternal failure can be just as fearsome a boogeyman as any monster under the bed." (Buzzfeed News)
"As much a boogeyman story as it is a cautionary tale on the horrors of parenting... Parenting is stressful, and boogeymen are frightening, so utilizing both is an ingenious method for creating anxiety-ridden horror. " (Philosophy in Film)
