Brazil

In the sci-fi, dystopian fantasy masterpiece BRAZIL, Jonathan Pryce plays a daydreaming every-man who finds himself caught in the soul-crushing gears of a nightmarish bureaucracy. This cautionary tale by Terry Gilliam, one of the great films of the 1980s, has come to be esteemed alongside antit-otalitarian works by the likes of George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, and Kurt Vonnegut Jr. And in terms of set design, cinematography, music, and effects, BRAZIL is a nonstop dazzler. With Robert DeNiro, Kim Greist, Katharine Helmond, Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins, Michael Palin, Jim Broadbent.

Low-level bureaucrat Sam Lowry (Pryce) escapes the monotony of his day-to-day life through a recurring daydream of himself as a virtuous hero saving a beautiful damsel. Investigating a case that led to the wrongful arrest and eventual death of an innocent man instead of wanted terrorist Harry Tuttle, he meets the woman from his daydream, and in trying to help her gets caught in a web of mistaken identities, mindless bureaucracy and lies.

"Gilliam's dystopian epic remains among his best, blending his trademark visual inventiveness with a vicious brand of social satire. Unique and essential." (Empire Magazine)

"It's like a stoned, slapstick 1984: a nightmare comedy in which the comedy is just an aspect of the nightmarishness." (The New Yorker)

"Terry Gilliam's ferociously creative black comedy is filled with wild tonal contrasts, swarming details, and unfettered visual invention -- every shot carries a charge of surprise and delight." (Chicago Reader)
