True Romance

You're so cool.

Our Friday Late Night Movie series continues on Friday, February 7 with a screening one of the most oddball, quirky, hyper-violent yet surprisingly sweet romances we never get tired of re-visiting on the big screen, TRUE ROMANCE.

Before becoming one of contemporary cinema's most acclaimed and culturally relevant directors, Quentin Tarantino had a little luck penning some scripts that would eventually be made into cult-classics, including one that would be made by the late, great Tony Scott in 1993 - TRUE ROMANCE. Christian Slater stars as Clarence, a comic-book nerd and Elvis fanatic who meets and falls in love with a prostitute named Alabama (Patricia Arquette) at a Sonny Chiba triple feature on his birthday. When Clarence breaks the news of their impending nuptials to her pimp (Gary Oldman), their conversation goes... quite awry. Things quickly go from bad to worse when Clarence mistakenly grabs a suitcase of the pimp's cocaine, thinking it is Alabama's clothing. The two unlikely lovebirds quickly hit the road for California, hoping to sell the drugs and start anew. Unfortunately for them, the mob wants their suitcase back, and the star-crossed lovers find themselves on the lam. Scott's full-throttle, stylish direction is on full display in this hyper-violent, darkly funny, and strangely sweet romantic 90's audience favourite. Also starring Christopher Walken, James Gandolfini, Brad Pitt, and Michael Rapaport.

"This is not only an immensely entertaining violent action but genuinely romantic at times. Tarantino's dialogue is as sparkling as ever." (Empire Magazine)

"Vibrant, grisly, gleefully amoral." (The New York Times)

"Violent to a fault, glam to the max." (TIME)
