David Lynch Double Feature: Lynch/Oz & Mulholland Drive

Like so many movie-lovers around the world, we were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of filmmaker David Lynch, whose contribution to arts and culture is immeasurable. His monumentally beloved catalogue is its own impressive, cinematic legacy rich with old friends and oddball characters who make regular visits upon our silver screen. In the wake of his passing, there is no better way for us to pay tribute to his enigmatic career than by raising a glass, dimming the lights, and firing up the projector in his honour with a selection of some of his best loved works on the big screen, as he undoubtedly intended.

Director Alexandre O. Philippe will be joining us at the Rio Theatre on Tuesday, January 28 to host a David Lynch tribute screening featuring of both his acclaimed 2022 documentary LYNCH/OZ, followed by MULHOLLAND DRIVE.

Philippe has made a made his mark crafting documentaries - notably LEAP OF FAITH: WILLIAM FRIEDKIN ON THE EXORICST, MEMORY: THE ORIGINS OF ALIEN and 78/52:HITCHCOCK'S SHOWER SCENE (examining a certain watershed moment in PSYCHO) - that straddle the space between appreciative love letters and cinematic essays that might serve as comprehensive study guides.

The prolific documentarian's 2022 film LYNCH/OZ is no exception. In it, Philippe explores one of the most fascinating puzzles in the history of motion pictures: The enduring symbiosis between America’s primordial fairytale, THE WIZARD OF OZ, and David Lynch’s singular brand of popular surrealism.

Partial proceeds from the evening will be directed towards the LAFD Foundation. Special thanks to Janus Films for their support of this benefit.

LYNCH/OZ (Alexandre O. Philippe, 2022 / 108 minutes / NR) Victor Fleming's film 'The Wizard of Oz' (1939) is one of David Lynch's most enduring obsessions. This documentary goes over the rainbow to explore this Technicolor through-line in Lynch's work.

MULHOLLAND DR. (David Lynch, 2001 / 147 mins / 18A) Along Mulholland Drive nothing is what it seems. In the unreal universe of Los Angeles, the city bares its schizophrenic nature, an uneasy blend of innocence and corruption, love and loneliness, beauty and depravity. A woman is left with amnesia following a car accident. An aspiring young actress finds her staying in her aunt's home. The puzzle begins to unfold, propelling us through a mysterious labyrith of sensual experiences until we arrive at the intersection of dreams and nightmares.
