Wings of Desire (New Restoration)

WINGS OF DESIRE is one of cinema’s loveliest city symphonies. Bruno Ganz is Damiel, an angel perched atop buildings high over Berlin who can hear the thoughts—fears, hopes, dreams—of all the people living below. But when he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist, he is willing to give up his immortality and come back to earth to be with her. Made not long before the fall of the Berlin wall, this stunning tapestry of sounds and images, shot in black and white and color by the legendary Henri Alekan, is movie poetry. And it forever made the name Wim Wenders synonymous with film art. With Solveig Donmartin, Otta Sander, Peter Falk (as himself).

New 4K restoration with 5.1 sound mix provided by the Wim Wenders Foundation and supervised by Wim and Donata Wenders. Funding provided by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the FFA, and by the French CNC.

"...utterly beautiful and provides a document for West Berlin just before the fall of the wall..." (The Stranger)

"While the time and setting of 'Wings of Desire' is incredibly specific, its themes spring eternal." (Paste Magazine)

"A cinema of ideas, almost an essay movie, and utterly distinctive." (Guardian)

"Wenders has made a film that is elegiac but harsh, hard-edged and romantic, haunted as well as haunting, but that... holds out the promise of love as a benign coming-to-rest." (Vogue)

WINGS OF DESIRE "Der Himmel über Berlin" (Wim Wenders, 1988 / 128 mins / 14A / English subtitles) Two angels, Damiel and Cassiel, glide through the streets of Berlin, observing the bustling population, providing invisible rays of hope to the distressed but never interacting with them. When Damiel falls in love with lonely trapeze artist Marion, the angel longs to experience life in the physical world, and finds--with some words of wisdom from actor Peter Falk (playing himself) -- that it might be possible for him to take human form.
