“If I had one day when I didn’t have to be all confused and I didn’t have to feel that I was ashamed of everything. If I felt that I belonged someplace. You know?”Though he died before the film’s release, actor James Dean’s tragically short yet utterly remarkable career is most closely identified with his iconic role in the landmark drama REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, which also starred Natalie Wood and Sam Mineo. The film is notable for its dramatic social, class, and inter-generational themes that explored the growing conflicts that began to emerge with the burgeoning “youth culture” of 1950s America.

REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (Nicholas Ray, 1955 / 111 mins / PG) | After moving to a new town, troublemaking teen Jim Stark (James Dean) is supposed to have a clean slate, although being the new kid in town brings its own problems. While searching for some stability, Stark forms a bond with a disturbed classmate, Plato (Sal Mineo), and falls for local girl Judy (Natalie Wood). However, Judy is the girlfriend of neighborhood tough, Buzz (Corey Allen). When Buzz violently confronts Jim and challenges him to a drag race, the new kid’s real troubles begin.
