Picnic at Hanging Rock (50th Anniversary Restoration)
All that we see or seem, is but a dream within a dream.
Beautifully restored for is 50th Anniversary, PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK is a sensual and striking chronicle of a disappearance and its aftermath that put director Peter Weir on the map, and helped usher in a new era of Australian cinema.
Based on an acclaimed 1967 novel by Joan Lindsay, Weir's enigmatic adaptation is set at the turn of the twentieth century, and concerns a small group of students from an all- female college who vanish, along with a chaperone, while on a St. Valentine’s Day outing. Less a mystery than a journey into the mystic, as well as an inquiry into issues of class and sexual repression in Australian society, Weir’s gorgeous, disquieting film is a work of poetic horror whose secrets haunt viewers to this day. With Rachel Roberts, Anne Lambert, Jacki Weaver, Vivean Gray.
"Visually mesmerizing, 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' is moody, unsettling, and enigmatic -- a masterpiece of Australian cinema and a major early triumph for director Peter Weir." (Rotten Tomatoes)
"This is a film that seems somehow subtly different every time you watch it, full of tantalising possibilities." (Eye For Film UK)
"By turns fascinating and mysterious." (Empire Magazine)
"The “readings” are endless, the mood impossibly eerie and the legacy untouchable." (Times UK)
