Screamboat

Even time is no match for powerhouse, industry mammoth, Disney, when it comes to a ticking clock on intellectual property becoming public domain. Created and drawn by Walt himself, 'Steamboat Willie' AKA 'Mickey Mouse' is up for grabs and boy did director, Steven LaMorte ever take hold with SCREAMBOAT.

Screamboat is a 2025 American comedy horror film directed by appropriately surnamed, Steven LaMorte. It's a reimagining of Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks's 1928 animated short film, Steamboat Willie. The plot follows a group of New Yorkers who are terrorized by a monstrous mouse named Steamboat Willie. It stars David Howard Thornton, Allison Pittel, Amy Schumacher, Jesse Posey, Kailey Hyman, Jesse Kove, and Jarlath Conroy.

Though the Walt Disney Company retains exclusive rights to its own Mickey Mouse universe, the Steamboat Willie version of the iconic character entered the public domain on January 1, 2024. One day later, Screamboat was announced.

"Screamboat is perfect stoner escapism, a film that never takes itself too seriously and takes pleasure in poking fun at our corporate overlords." (Dread Central)

"One of many horror movies based on public-domain intellectual property, this gory comedy is a slight cut above the rest, thanks to its humor, fun visual effects, and grimy ferryboat setting." (Common Sense Media)
