Gladiator (25th Anniversary Screening)

"Father of a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I shall have my vengeance in this life or the next!"

Iconic director Ridley Scott's sweeping historical action epic GLADIATOR is as enthralling now as it was upon its release in 2000. Winner of five Oscars (including Best Picture), including one for Australian actor Russell Crowe thanks to his stark yet moving portrayal of Maximus, a once-powerful Roman general stripped of his rank and forced to become a common gladiator at the behest of a corrupt and jealous Emperor.

When the stoic Emperor Marcus Aurelius' scheming son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix, in an Oscar-nominated performance) learns that he is to be passed over as heir in favour of his father's favourite General Maximus (Crowe), he becomes enraged and vindictive. His petulant jealousy sees him arranging the murders of both his father and Maximus' entire family in order to seize control of the empire. The devastated general is subsequently sold into slavery to be trained as a gladiator - but his unexpected popularity in the arena threatens the throne. With Richard Harris, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Djimon Hounsou, and Derek Jacobi.

"As a sword and sandal epic, it still holds the exciting pulse to this day with Russell Crowe's magnificent performance and its emotional story about the Roman gladiator who fights as a liberator against a corrupt emperor." (Cinefilia)

"Russell Crowe solidly anchors this epic-scale gladiator movie - the first in nearly four decades - by using his burly frame and expressive face to give dimension to what might otherwise have been comic book heroics." (The Hollywood Reporter)
