Hot Spring Shark Attack
The Summer of 2025 marks the year that cinema's most famous shark (aka, JAWS) turns 50, and it turns out there's blood in the water (or on the screen?) as movie-loving audiences the world over hunger for more of the terrifying ocean predator.
Japanese filmmaker Morihito Inoue makes his feature debut with a horror-comedy that is sure to whet the appetite of summer audiences with HOT SPRING SHARK ATTACK, a deft fusion of shark movies and kaiju films that offers a nostalgic ode to the the beloved practical effects-heavy tokusatsu movies. SPOILER ALERT: "The dog survives!"
In Atsumi City, where construction of a huge tourist complex led by the mayor, Mankan, is underway, a series of incidents have occurred in which the people while bathing in onsen have suddenly disappeared. What's more, the bodies of unidentified people who had been attacked by sharks in the sea were found. The police chief, Tsuka, and marine biology doctor, Kose, who set out to investigate, discover the shocking truth that ferocious sharks that have been revived from ancient times are freely moving between the hot springs and attacking people... The cast includes Takuya Fujimura (ONE CUT OF THE DEAD), Daniel Aguilar (SHIN GODZILLA), Shôichirô Akaboshi, Masaki Naito, Koichi Makigami, Kiyobumi Kaneko, and Mio Takaki.
"An oversupply of sharks, tokusatsu effects that fully embody a kaiju movie, an in sane plot, an overly luxurious soundtrack, and spectacular explosions—everything was superb. The intricate sci-fi settings are brilliantly elevated into Shark Fantasy, and I was moved by the fact that a bizarre shark film, standing alongside "Sharknado," has emerged from Japan."
