Raging Bull

Join us on Sunday, August 17 for a double feature that celebrates actor Robert De Niro (on his birthday!) and includes two of our favourite performances from his many collaborations with filmmaker Martin Scorsese - RAGING BULL and TAXI DRIVER.

RAGING BULL is an indisputable cinematic triumph, a black and white biopic that is often lauded as one of the greatest films of the 1980s, and frequently described as Scorsese's "magnum opus." The ambitious sports film follows the dramatic life story of Italian-American boxer Jake LaMotta (De Niro, in one of his Golden Globe and Oscar-winning performances), a former middleweight champion, whose reputation for tenacity and success in the ring was offset by his self-destructive troubled domestic life. La Motta was full of rage, sexual jealousy, and crippling suspicion - particularly towards his wife (Cathy Moriarty) and manager/brother (Joe Pesci) - which, in the end, left him destitute, alone, and seeking redemption. Also staring Nicholas Colasanto, Theresa Saldana and Frank Vincent.

"This is not a film about boxing. This is a film about the human condition and about cinema itself." - Empire Magazine

"Arguably Martin Scorsese's and Robert De Niro's finest film, Raging Bull is often painful to watch, but it's a searing, powerful work about an unsympathetic hero." - Rotten Tomatoes

RAGING BULL (Martin Scorsese, 1980 / 129 mins / 18A) When Jake LaMotta steps into a boxing ring and obliterates his opponent, he's a prizefighter. But when he treats his family and friends the same way, he's a ticking time bomb, ready to go off at any moment. Though LaMotta wants his family's love, something always seems to come between them. Perhaps it's his violent bouts of paranoia and jealousy. This kind of rage helped make him a champ, but in real life, he winds up in the ring alone.

TAXI DRIVER (Martin Scorsese, 1976 / 113 mins / 18A) Robert De Niro stars as Travis Bickle in this oppressive psychodrama about a Vietnam veteran who rebels against the decadence and immorality of big city life in New York while working the nightshift as a taxi driver.
