Inglourious Basterds
"Now, that's a bingo!"
We felt the time was right to scalp some Nazis and speak the King's, so we're revisiting Quentin Tarantino's quasi-historical fantasy INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS on our big screen on August 2.
Set in a fantasy universe that can only ever really exist in the films of Tarantino, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS begins in German-occupied France, where young Shosanna Dreyfus witnesses the brutal execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz, in his Oscar-winning performance). Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent) narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad (including Eli Roth, B.J. Novak, and Samm Levine) joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own. Like a WW2-era "spaghetti western," the film manages to be equal parts violent, fun and smart, with endlessly entertaining dialogue to punctuate the kind of non-linear story we've come to expect from one of cinema's most renowned filmmakers. As per usual, QT assembled an all-star cast that also includes Michael Fassbender, Mike Myers, Julie Dreyfus, and many others.
"Tarantino's tight script is playfully sharp in all languages." (The Georgia Straight)
