Eddington
Indie arthouse darling Ari Aster (MIDSOMMAR, HEREDITARY, BEAU IS AFRAID) latest effort EDDINGTON is a sharp social commentary that is equal parts satire and neo-Western. Set in 2020, against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, the story follows a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor that sparks a powder keg as neighbour is pitted against neighbour in the rural town Eddington, N.M. With Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix, and Austin Butler.
"Ari Aster’s “Eddington” is such a superb social satire about contemporary America that I want to bury it in the desert for 20 years. More distance will make it easier to laugh." (Los Angeles Times)
"Your mileage will vary according to your stomach for this stuff, but I found myself breathless with giggles at times, sometimes the therapeutic laugh of recognition and sometimes because Ari Aster has a keen eye for what’s most absurd about human nature." (New York Times)
"Ultimately, 'Eddington' is not as much a cautionary tale about American psychosis as an immersion in it, and, as such, it gradually takes on the form of a stress dream, gaining in resonance the further it plunges into a fugue state. " (The Ringer)
"It is undeniably a great effort from everyone involved. And it’s exceedingly, darkly funny. For a first attempt at a Western, I’d say Ari Aster nailed it." (Film Threat)
"[Joaquin] Phoenix is the perfect instrument for Ari Aster’s bleak and self-destructive view of humanity. Consider 'Eddington' a warning." (San Francsico Chronicle)
