Misery (Rob Reiner Tribute)

"I'm your number one fan!"

Join us at the Rio Theatre as we pay tribute to the late, great filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner by dimming the lights and firing up the projector for a Friday Late Night screening of one of our all-time favourite movies of his, MISERY.

Adapted from horror master Stephen King's novel, MISERY casts James Caan as pulpy romance author Paul Sheldon, who crashes his car on a snowy Colorado road whilst returning from a self-imposed writing retreat. He is found by oddball loner and former nurse Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates, in her Oscar winning performance), the "number one fan" of Paul's popular heroine Misery Chastaine. Things go literally go awry when Annie discovers Paul's plans for her favourite literary character are not entirely to her liking, and the injured and captive author finds himself completely at the mercy of her psychopathic, monstrous nature. Also starring Lauren Bacall, Richard Farnsworth and Misery the Pig (as herself).

"Bates turns Wilkes into the nastiest nurse to reach the screen since Louise Fletcher tormented Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." (Philadelphia Inquirer)

"Reiner captures just the right level of physical tension, but for the most part wisely emphasises the mental duels. Terrific." (Time Out)

MISERY (Rob Reiner, 1990 / 107 mins / PG) After a serious car crash, novelist Paul Sheldon  is rescued by former nurse Annie Wilkes , who claims to be his biggest fan. Annie brings him to her remote cabin to recover, where her obsession takes a dark turn when she discovers Sheldon is killing off her favorite character from his novels. As Sheldon devises plans for escape, Annie grows increasingly controlling, even violent, as she forces the author to shape his writing to suit her twisted fantasies.
