Director Ciro Guerra's masterful and highly acclaimed (it is the first Colombian film to be nominated for a Best Foreign Picture Oscar), "El Abrazo De La Serpiente" has been described as both "blisteringly poetic" and a "soulful, strange, and rare discovery." Visually stunning and thematically rich, the film is inspired by the actual diaries of two early 20th century explorers hunting for a rare Amazonian plant. Shot on location in the Colombian Amazon, the film takes place in 1909 and 1940 and tells two stories; Karamakate is an Amazonian shaman and last survivor of his tribe who travels with two scientists, German Theodor Koch-Grunberg and American Richard Evans Schultes, to look for the rare yakruna, a sacred plant.
