Sugar Rot (w/ Director Q&A)
After a brutal assault by an ice cream man, punk girl Candy becomes host to a mutant baby. As her body transforms into ice cream, those around her see her not as a person, but as something to be consumed. Fueled by a blistering punk soundtrack and dripping with grotesque body horror, this wild exploitation film oozes with feminist subtext.
Locally lensed and even partly filmed at the Rio Theatre, SUGAR ROT features music by Canadian punk legends the Dayglo Abortions, and Vancouver punk bands Daddy Issues and Pet Blessings.
“It's very good... It's kind of troma-ish, but it's totally original. It's great.” (Lloyd Kaufman)
"'Sugar Rot' channels the anarchic spirit of punk to tell a fiercely feminist story about autonomy, capitalism, and pleasure. With its cathartic cartoon gore and biting satire of anti-feminist rhetoric, it’s a bold and sticky scream of rebellion." (Justine Smith)
“[Director] Kozak’s feature narrative film debut is a plutonium-grade flashpoint in the history of punk culture movies.” (Film Threat)
“Color me impressed. Writer/director Becca Kozak is a talent to watch for. I can't wait to see what's next for her, as this is a real stunner of a debut feature.” (Art Ettinger)
