Heard (World Premiere + Cast Q&A Screening)

Join us at the Rio Theatre for the world premiere of HEARD, a Vancouver made TELUS Originals film that chronicles five Hard of Hearing people searching for community in the space between Hearing and Deaf. This ALL AGES film is followed by a live Q&A with the cast.

HEARD is a documentary film about the collective experience of the space between hearing and Deafness. Hearing is a fundamental component to the way society is structured. We’ve built infrastructure, activities, culture and communication based on the ability to hear.  And on the other end of our spectrum, society has seen Deaf individuals develop a sophisticated language and culture built around Deafness. That leaves a gap between two distinct cultures where many Hard of Hearing (HoH) people lie. Heard follows Hard of Hearing filmmaker Brian Ceci as he grapples with accepting his own condition by connecting with other people on the HoH spectrum to create a small support community.

*HHEARD is proud to include all Hard of Hearing and Deaf individuals for this screening. Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility has generously donated ASL interpretation of the film as well as open captions and Auracast throughout the evening. The cast Q&A following the film will also include open captions and ASL interpreters. Canadian Hard of Hearing Association - BC Chapter has generously rented out the theatre for the remainder of the evening for connecting and mingling with other Hard of Hearing and Deaf folks.

HEARD features filmmaker Brian Ceci's quest to accept his own hearing loss, a condition he's dealt with since birth but unconsciously avoided throughout his life to blend in. Searching for community, Brian connects with four other people whose unique hearing experiences help him connect the dots and move forward with his own hearing. This event has been made accessible for all Hard of Hearing and Deaf folks.

The film itself is open captioned, and will feature Auracast to stream audio directly into user's hearing aids. The Q&A will also have open captions and ASL interpretation.
