Dario Argento's 'Inferno' (1980)

Dario Argento's 'Inferno' (1980)

9:00pm - Sunday, Jul 10, 2016

Following a fantastic turnout for Italian auteur Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA as part of our Friday Late Night Movies series in June, it seemed like a good idea to program its follow-up; the giallo-infused, equally artful horror classic INFERNO. Once again, we are very pleased to present this film with the generous help and support of our friends at the Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre and the Italian Film Festival Vancouver.

The second of Argento's so-called 'Three Mothers' trilogy, INFERNO failed to match the commercial success of its predecessor, SUSPIRIA, despite sharing many of the same thematic elements, special effects, and famously saturated, nightmarishly colourful cinematography. Over time, the film has gained traction among both film critics and movie lovers, with noted journalist Kim Newman calling the film, "perhaps the most underrated horror movie of the 1980s" and Total Film including it among its 50 Greatest Horror Films of All Time. The film's strong score deserves an equal amount of attention for its thunderous, moody, gothic and occasionally operatic notes courtesy of Emerson, Lake and Palmer's Keith Emerson.
