The Blair Witch Project
Released in 1999, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT was an unlikely box-office hit that ultimately ended up a total cinematic game-changer, captivating critics and audiences around the world while ushering in the entirely modern, "found footage" horror genre in its wake.
Comprised of a mix of "found footage" Hi-8 video with black-and-white 16 mm film in what audiences perceived to be a documentary, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT tells the tale of three film students (Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C. Williams) who, in 1994, have traveled to a small town to collect footage about the mythical Blair Witch, a legendary local murderer. Over the course of several days, the students interview townspeople and gather clues to support the tale's veracity. But the project takes a frightening turn when the students lose their way in the woods and begin hearing horrific noises. A year later... Their footage is found.
"You can dismiss 'The Blair Witch Project' as a trick. Or you can give in to the treat and savor that rarest of accomplishments in a field notorious for tedium and repetition -- an original horror movie." (Philadelphia Enquirer)
"The scariest movie I've ever seen. Not the goriest, the grossest, the weirdest, the eeriest, the sickest, the creepiest or the slimiest... Just flat out the scariest." (Washington Post)
"A cunningly conceived and crafted exercise in suggestibility and terror." (The New Yorker)
"I have seen the new face of movie horror and its name is The Blair Witch Project, a groundbreaker in fright that reinvents scary for the new millennium." (Rolling Stone Magazine)
