The Seven Year Itch

"When it gets hot like this, you know what I do? I keep my undies in the icebox!"

The Rio Theatre's series of classic films continues with another hilarious title from one of our all-time favourite movie partnerships - Billy Wilder and Marilyn Monroe!

THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH is still as sexy, funny and charming today as it was when it was released over 60 years ago. Director Billy Wilder was at the top of his game with this sophisticated yet utterly farcical romantic comedy fantasy that explores a heretofore faithfully married man's feelings (the "seven year itch" refers to the supposed "timely" urge towards matrimonial infidelity) about his gorgeous neighbour (Marilyn Monroe, in one of the most iconic bombshell performances ever put to celluloid).

In the midst of a summer heat wave, New Yorker Richard Sherman (Tom Ewell, who also played the part on Broadway) ships his wife, Helen (Evelyn Keyes), and their son off to Maine for vacation. Left alone to work back in Manhattan, he encounters a gorgeous blonde model who has moved into the apartment upstairs, and becomes immediately infatuated. While pondering an affair, Richard dreams of his beautiful new neighbor -- but will his fantasies about her become a reality?

THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH (Billy Wilder, 1955 / 105 mins / PG) With his family away for their annual summer holiday, Richard Sherman decides he has the opportunity to live a bachelor's life. The beautiful but ditzy blonde from the apartment above catches his eye and they soon start spending time together - maybe a little too much time!
