The Handmaiden
9:00pm - Tuesday, Dec 13, 2016
From Park Chan-wook, the celebrated director of OLDBOY, LADY VENGEANCE, THIRST and STOKER, comes a ravishing new crime drama inspired by the novel 'Fingersmith' by British author Sarah Waters. Having transposed the story to 1930s-era colonial Korea and Japan, Park presents a gripping and sensual tale of a young Japanese Lady living on a secluded estate, and a Korean woman who is hired to serve as her new handmaiden, but who is secretly involved in a conman's plot to defraud her of her large inheritance. Powered by remarkable performances from Kim Min-hee (RIGHT NOW, WRONG THEN) as Lady Hideko, Ha Jung-woo (THE CHASER) as the conman who calls himself the Count and sensational debut actress Kin Tae-ri as the maid Sookee, THE HANDMAIDEN borrows the most dynamic elements of its source material and combines it with Park Chan-wook's singular vision and energy to create an unforgettable viewing experience. (Please note: This film screens in Korean with English subtitles.)

"Park Chan-wook is a master of classy trash... There's artistry in his filmmaking, but also a lot of blood, plenty of sick humor and moments of sheer lunacy. THE HANDMAIDEN ranks among his best films yet." (Chicago Sun-Times)
"Park's Handmaiden is a great big chocolate box of a movie in which a rich and satisfying narrative is enlivened by some piquant erotica and the sharp tang of politics." (The Globe & Mail)
"Commercial and arthouse audiences alike will either thrill to its stylized potboiler elements or swoon over the opiate influence of Park's signature aesthetic beauty." (Variety)
"The art of the tease is rarely as refined as in The Handmaiden." (New York Times)
"THE HANDMAIDEN is just pure cinema, a dizzying, disturbing fable of love and betrayal that overloads the viewer with luxurious imagery, while never losing track of the tragic, human core of its story." (The Atlantic)
THE HANDMAIDEN "Ah-Ga-Sse" (Park Chan-wook, 2016 / 145 mins / 18A / Korean with English subtitles) In 1930s Korea, in the period of Japanese occupation, a new girl (Sookee) is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress (Hideko) who lives a secluded life on a large countryside estate with her domineering Uncle (Kouzuki). But the maid has a secret. She is a pickpocket recruited by a swindler posing as a Japanese Count to help him seduce the Lady to elope with him, rob her of her fortune, and lock her up in a madhouse. The plan seems to proceed according to plan until Sookee and Hideko discover some unexpected emotions.
