Landfill Harmonic
1:30pm - Saturday, Dec 3, 2016
Get ready to stand up and cheer for one of this year's most acclaimed, inspiring, and joyful documentaries, LANDFILL HARMONIC. Follow the true story of Paraguayan music director Favio Chavez, who guides the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a group made up of young people from a slum community that play instruments - made entirely out of garbage. When their group's story goes viral, they are catapulted onto the world's stage.
Our world generates about a billion tons of garbage a year, and many of those who live with it and from it are the poor - like the people of Cateura, Paraguay. LANDFILL HARMONIC follows the remarkable story of people who have found a way to transform the garbage into something else entirely - a beautiful community. This documentary follows the Orchestra as it takes its inspiring spectacle of trash-into-music around the world. Follow the lives of a garbage picker, a music teacher and a group of children from a Paraguayan slum that, out of necessity, started creating instruments entirely out of garbage. LANDFILL HARMONIC is a beautiful story about the transformative power of music, which also highlights two vital issues of our times: poverty and waste pollution.
Audience awards, SXSW (South by Southwest Film Festival) and AFI (American Film Institute).
