Dead Snow

Don't steal gold. It always ends... Badly.

After making a (bloody) splash following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009, Norwegian writer-director Tommy Wirkola's Scandinavian CABIN FEVER-esque take on the zombie trope landed itself a cult following (and 2014 sequel) thanks to its fresh take on a well-worn genre. In an interview, Wirkola said, "When we were about to sit down and write the actual script, we started thinking ‘What is more evil than a zombie’? A Nazi-zombie! We have a really strong war-history up in the north of Norway from World War Two, so it was fun to combine actual events with our own story. And you know Nazis have always been the ultimate villains in movies. Combine that with zombies and you really get something that no one would sympathise with."

There's not much else that can be said about DEAD SNOW, except that it's maybe the perfect kind of Friday Late Night Movie gorefest you need to ring in the New Year. (Also: English subtitles.) I mean, what's worse than zombies exacting their revenge on eight medical students on an Easter ski trip vacay in the remote, mountainous terrain of Norway after they pilfer some gold that doesn't belong to them? When those zombies are Nazis, that's what. Also, blood. And splatter. (Lots.)

"If it sounds silly, it is, but in the best way." (The Washington Post)

"You gotta love a movie about Nazi zombies. Well, you don't have to love it, but this one is refreshingly gross." (CNN)

"Gore hounds will enjoy the comic mayhem and picturesque blood splatter on the virgin snow." (The Chicago Reader)

"Earns points for enthusiasm, creativity, and a powerful devotion to all things ultra-splattery." (The Horror Show)
