Neruda

Acclaimed Chilean director Pablo Larrain has done extremely well of late with two widely acclaimed and high-profile biopics this year; NERUDA and JACKIE (starring Natalie Portman). Recently nominated for a Golden Globe (Best Foreign Film) and Chile’s entry in the same category for this year’s Academy Awards, NERUDA stars Gael Garcia Bernal as an inspector tasked with hunting down Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda, who becomes a fugitive in his home country in the late 1940s for joining the Communist Party. “Not a biopic but a Nerudian take on the famed Chilean politician-poet, NERUDA is a stunningly inventive take on the function rather than the life of a writer.” (Variety)

“Inventive, intelligent, and beautifully filmed, Neruda transcends the traditional biopic structure to look at the meaning beyond the details of its subject’s life.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

“As in all his movies, Larrain is an expert juggler of tones: by turns antic and lyrical, Neruda is shot with a dark, nocturnal beauty and a mournful orchestral score.” (NPR)

“Calderon and Larrain have taken great dramatic license with Neruda’s story, and the payoff is more than worth the risk.” (Chicago Sun-Times)

“A virtual fireworks show about the power of poetry and fame on the world.” (Entertainment Weekly)
